The Lighter Side / Re: Friends and colleagues of relatives.
« on: Sunday 29 January 17 17:17 GMT (UK)  »
When I worked on a heritage railway, I found out that one of the contractors on site had worked with my great uncle. At one of the event days, I found an exhibitor who knew my grandads cousin. Also answered phone there one day and found that the lady on the other end had same surname as me. When I eventually started doing the family tree, it turns out that her husband was related from my 3gt grandads second marriage. I relate from his first.

The Lighter Side / Re: what is/was your grandmas favourite chocolate

Not chocolate but my grandma used to always have butterscotch, the ones in the gold wrapper. Not seen any of that brand for years.
Don't remember a sweet shop in Newark houses by the way. I think there used to be one at a museum in York years ago. Of course you could look at photos of either beamish or Black Country museum

Hi bear cub

Yes the borders were different. Old Stratford was part of Northamptonshire. I think parts of Stony Stratford were also at one time.

Europe / Re: Birth in France

Hi Amanda

The best place to start is with the British embassies and consul records of birth, marriages and deaths. The records are on ancestry. If you look at some of yesterday's postings, someone has asked about the same records and info on other places to look are also on there

I have looked at the record now and saved a copy if you want it. It doesn't give date or place of birth but does give where they were living at time of baptism.

If it was in Scotland, there used to be some oil extraction from shale around that time
