Is there SKS in a position to look up an obituary for the William WESTALL buried 14 Feb 1880 at Newtown  Road Cemetery, please?  I believe he was the character who undertook the physical demands of the 1869 'Beating of the Bounds' ceremony and the likely father of the young WESTALL lad fished out alive from the canal after the ice broke in Dec 1870.

Three years (1870-1872) have very recently appeared on the British Newspaper Archive site.

Yipee!

I had feared that the Newbury Weekly News would not feature on-line in my lifetime but my prayers have been answered!  It seems that the process has recently started, with Edition No. 153 - 6 January 1870, which is the injection I needed to become research active again:  wonderful in-depth local news reporting from its inception, including Kingsclere items and a few other North Hampshire parishes.

The BNA website shows that the years 1867-1873 are in, or planned for, but as from 25 Aug 2017 the earliest issue is 6 Jan 1870 and the latest 24 Dec 1872.

Eureka!

Plenty of coverage for Hampshire in the following papers.

Reading Mercury
Berkshire Chronicle
Hampshire Advertiser
Aldershot Military Gazette

Not in my opinion!

Kingsclere has its own section .....   :)

Hi Terry

Thanks for your interest.

James, father to Thomas Page GILL, was buried at Yarcombe, Devon in January 1844, followed by infant son John in May 1844. I found no trace of their graves in the churchyard but they are recorded in the Yarcombe Burials PR.

James' widow Elizabeth [nee PAGE] remarried in 1853 to Joseph EVERY and after his death in 1883 she resided with her married children from the 2nd marriage:  1891 with Charlotte J. HILL in Chard and subsequently James John EVERY, Postmaster at Buckland St Mary, where she died and was buried in 1896.  There is a Somerset MI for the couple but I have not visited the grave at BSM.

The Howick RC Church copy marriage certificate 13 Mar 1910 of Thomas Page GILL, widower, 71 to Ellen McINERNEY, widow, 70 confirms his identity as the son born Exeter, England, to James GILL, Coachman, and Elizabeth [nee PAGE].  His death certificate confirms his occupation Military Pensioner.

Quote from LizzieL:
I've only found a very few Berkshire burials for my family on FindMyPast and not well transcribed - my grandfather is transcribed as Helen - his name was Heber!

I've only ever encountered the name Heber once:  in my medical records from Royal Hants County Hospital in relation to the eminent Orthopaedic Surgeon LANGSTON.

Bless you, Chris.

I may have to search further afield as I think this burial is likely for the Sarah born 21/10/1799 :
17 Feb 1800 Sarah LEWIS 13w Berks Newbury, St Nicolas.

'My' Sarah was consistent with her age: 'rounded down' to 35 in 1841; 47 in 1851; recorded Sarah WESTHALL [sic] aged 50 for her passage on 07 Mar 1853 on the Ellen Maria:  Liverpool/New Orleans bound for Salt Lake with almost 350 other souls.

Thank you so much.

Could SKS please see if the baptism for Sarah LEWIS features in the PR c1803?

This may be her family unit in Toomer's Census at West Mills 31 May 1815:
LEWIS, Francis   47   born c1768
LEWIS, Sarah   48   born c1767
LEWIS, Joseph    19   born c1796
LEWIS, James   17   born c1798
LEWIS, Sarah   12   born c1803 [likely bride of Wm WESTALL 16 May 1820]
HOLLISTER, John   Carter

Sarah junr, a minor, married with consent of parents, and the groom provided a very confident signature, but there were no obvious family witnesses to the ceremony.

This is a possible marriage for the parents by Licence at Hamstead Marshall:
07 Jan 1791 Francis LEWIS   of Newbury = Sarah MIEL or MIAL of Hamstead Marshall.

I think it likely the couple suffered infant mortalities, including an earlier Sarah buried aged 13 wks in 1800, but the baptisms are the key to establishing the extent of the family.  Any assistance will be very gratefully received.

Somerset Lookup Requests / Re: Sarah WALLING, Churchstanton, bapt 1796

I recorded James Gill's parents as William and MARIA.

So your statement in your initial post in this thread viz: 'my GGrandfather James Gill, born Dec 1822 son of James and Maria' was a typo, which is why I questioned it and reproduced my extracts from microfiche copies of the PRs!

I believe 'my' James was the Defiance night-coachman who died in 1844 and was buried at Yarcombe, Devon. Sadly, he is recorded in the 1841 Census at Ilminster, Somerset, as born 'in County',  but his wife and some children recorded similarly are known to have been born in Devon.

I also believe my line of descent is from Thomas, eldest son of Henry GILL dec'd 1808 late of Willands, Churchstanton, 30 acres held on a 1797 lease for 21 years.  I do not know what became of Thomas or his wife Lydia (nee CRABB of Ashill) after baptism of several children between Churchstanton and Yarcombe but I have a Settlement Examination for a James GILL aged 13 dated 1818 which records inter alia that he was taken by his mother to an Uncle James CRABB at Northleigh [Devon], before returning a year later to serve Robert OSBORNE at Churchstanton for approx. 3 years.

I, too, have been researching a very long time but I only found a third death notice for my coachman as recently as a couple of weeks ago, in the Dorset County Chronicle 25 Jan 1844, so at the moment I have 2 Dorset reports and 1 Somerset but nothing yet for Devon.  I live in hope that some day I encounter another descendant with a bit more knowledge of my branch or a more detailed obituary.

Some of 'my' GILLs of Churchstanton popped up in the registers of Clayhidon and Yarcombe, and one in particular, whose parentage I've been unable to prove, had his children baptized in several different parishes en route through Devon and Somerset.

Hi dee-jay, I have just seen this post, and wonder if we have ancestors in common? My Gills are from Churchstanton. They tended to stay put over the centuries, until my GGrandfather James Gill, born Dec 1822 son of James and Maria, joined the army in 1840 and probably never went back to Devon/Somerset.

Are you confident about James' parentage?  These are extracts from my Churchstanton records:

I thought we had corresponded previously, as I remembered your use of the 'ff' when that was the ancient way of recording a capital 'F'.
