Again, thank you! My neighbour, whose grandfather this chap was, is amazed!

The bit that confuses me is "wife of James Davies, whom she had left 10 years ago, when she went to South Africa with deceased" followed by " about 13 years ago, when witness came over from South Africa"............. maybe I'm missing something??

Thank you everyone for your help, some questions resolved, some remain, some pop up for the first time! I will sift through it all and get back to you all!

I apologise for my tardy response. My beautiful dog died Thursday morning, so I've been in a bit of a daze, still am actually.

The maternity hospital where I was born was formerly a workhouse. When Dad registered my birth the REGISTRAR entered place of birth as "Tredegar Workhouse". Mum went ballistic!!!! Dad had to go and get it changed in no short order! So yes, the stigma did linger......... and so did the name.

The newspaper report of his murder states he had been in Australia for 10 months, so that would make it about January 1914. His grave index card shows wife as Sarah Church.

He;s a bit of a mystery man, this one!

First appearance 1881 UK census. Lives with father Thomas at 255, New Cross Rd. Greenwich. He marries Sarah Ann Purchase Mar. 1883 in Malling, Kent.

The next appearance is 19/10/1886 when he disembarks the "Chyebassa' in Brisbane with wife Mary Ann, infant Felix born JFM 1886 Medway Kent.

I assume he's back in South Africa by 1899 where daughter Audrey Elizabeth Marian is born followed by Cecil Alfred in 1903, he dying later that same year.

Then there's big gap........... he doesn't appear until he gets murdered in 1914!!!

Where did he embark the "Chyebassa"?  What happened to Sarah Ann? When did he return to South Africa and come back again to Australia?

Any help or suggestions to fill the gaps would be greatly appreciated (and stop me pulling my hair out!!!!!)

I meant Alfred was a bit of a lad. Had a rotten temper too, apparently!

Trish! What can I say??? Thank you so much for that........ you've just added another piece to the puzzle! I think this might have been a second? marriage. He was a bit of a lad and had 7 or 8 children, and the lady he took up with here had 6 or 7 (or so we are told!). His death cert also says his relationship at time of death was de facto. He was murdered in QLD!!

Helping a friend with his ancestors. This chap is particularly interesting and we would like to know more about him. His death cert. states he was born in Free State, Africa, 1863. His father we think, was Thomas. Anyone with any more info?  We know a lot more about his life in Australia. He was murdered in 1914.
