Ive just come home and opened computer - thank you for all the replies
Re Mary Ann's marriage to Michael Quinlan - I had found that but wasn't sure so good to see I was on the right lines.
Re Susan Shevatt:
I have found an 1891 Census showing her (age46) as a visitor - Nurse at 51 Chester Sq (St George Hanover Square) Belgrade.
I also found a 1921 Probate record showing Susan Shevatt, spinster of 5 Wilton, Ross on Wye, Herefordshire, died 10/11/1921.  Effects of £137 to cemetery supervisor.

CaroleW: sadly,  No places of birth are shown in the entry, there is very little info in the workhouse record

Keyboard86 that looks promising - I couldn't find 1871 - 91 Census.

I have tracked an Ellen Shevatt through the Workhouse 1845, 48, 49, 51, 52, 53, 54, 68 and 71 with daughter Ellen jnr who would appear to be illegitimate.
Also in 1949 I've found William Shevatt aged about 40 with daughters Mary Ann 9, Ellen 8 & Susan 6.

Ellen Shevatt (snr) is living with married daughter Ellen and family 1901 & 1911 census and electoral register through 1920's to her death in 1928.

'Brother' Thomas Murphy is Head of household with them 1911 and for a few later years but then William George Head is heading the household for a few years and the latest  year I found it is Percy Johnson.

Could referring to Thomas Murphy as her brother be a lie?
Ellen Shevatt jnr names William Shevatt (dec'd) as her father on her marriage certificate - could she actually have named her Grandfather to cover for her illegitimacy?

Many thanks

1911 Cencus states Ellen was born Islington - may she be not telling truth and actually born a Ireland?

Still sadly can't find anything for the Shevatt / Whines marriage

Thanks CaroleW,
1911 Census looks like a clearly written James - 2 brothers born close together?

I had found several workhouse entries for Ellen Shevatt fitting the dates for mother and daughter but can't be sure if they are all referring to the same family.

Sorry for lack of info.
Re 1911 Cencus, has both Ellen snr and James stating born in Islington
Yes Shevatt / Murphy marriage is what I deduced

Thanks

I'm very much a beginner and struggling again
I have bought my Gt Grandfather's marriage cert. and have some confirmed information but I'm struggling to get further
Gt Grandfather Robert C A Whines (23) married Ellen Shevatt (24) in Islington on 3/10/1891 her father William Shevatt (builders labourer) was deceased & her address was 28 Sutterton St, Islington
1911 Census shows Ellen Shevatt (B: abt 1842) living with brother James Murphy (B: bat 1831) and Robert & Ellen Whines and children still at 28 Sutterton St.

I can't find a reference to William Shevatt and Ellen's marriage, or be sure of any census information on the family in-between

Can anyone help me stop going round in circles please!?

Janice
