World War Two / Kranji War memorial
« on: Wednesday 24 June 09 15:33 BST (UK)  »
I will be spending a short time in Singapore next week.

While I am there my time will not be my own but I am hoping to fit in a visit to Kranji to take a few pictures.

I can make no promises but if anyone would like any particular photo taking them please PM me with the reference and I'll see what I can do.

Census and Resource Discussion / Ancestry revamp
« on: Thursday 30 April 09 16:52 BST (UK)  »
There was a long anguished thread here a few weeks ago when Ancestry changed their front page.

Good news - now you have got used to it they are going to change it all again.

On their front page today "comming Soon - New Site Navigation"

I guess that we will have another long thread of complaints.

Yorkshire (North Riding) / LANGLEY/LANGDALE of Whitby
« on: Monday 20 October 08 13:30 BST (UK)  »
One of my brick walls was on my mothers side.

I traced William LANGLEY and his wife Frances both born about 1822 and supposedly in Whitby, back to Ruswarp in the 1871 census. Earlier than that I could find nothing: census, marriage certificates etc.

Looking again at the 71 census someone has added _alternative name Langdale.

Looking up the 61 and 51 censuses there is a family with the same names, dob etc. There is a marriage between William and Frances that ties in with in-laws staying with them in the 61 census.

Why would a whole family change their name between 1861 & 1871? Or has my brick wall now got some severe cracks in it?

World War Two / Completed Evacuation from Greece 1941
« on: Monday 25 August 08 15:26 BST (UK)  »
An old friend of mine (he is 94) has mentioned that he has been looking for where his younger brother died in Greece.

I have found:
Walter Gilbert Clarke KRRs 1st Bn The Rangers (6848190), died 15th April 1941. (athens war memorial face 12)
Family lore is that he was hit by a shell while being evacuated, at a place called Gavinia

This is too early for the evacuation itself.

I have exhausted Google.

Can anyone advise where I can look for more information?

Thanks

Armed Forces / Royal Aero Club
« on: Thursday 26 June 08 12:24 BST (UK)  »
For those of you with access to Ancestry, they have just added a database of Certificates from the Royal Aero Club - 1910-1950.

As many of the early pilots in the forces will have been certified by them this may be a valuable resource.

Together with the certificate index there are 34 photo albums of the pilots. Exiting for those with early pilots in their family history.

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Technical question
« on: Tuesday 24 June 08 22:56 BST (UK)  »
A few times lately I have downloaded a picture to work on and it opens over twice the size reported on the screen.

Could someone open the picture "Help please with colour" from NDRFT and tell me what size they get.

The caption says 1000*724 but both Elements and CS3 says over 2300. On the posted screen it looks like 1000.

Thanks

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Display of JPGs COMPLETE
« on: Thursday 05 June 08 20:32 BST (UK)  »
Is there something wrong with the server?

A couple of the latest posts do not display on the screen (I have tried several computers with the same result) and other seem to be having the same problem.

Also the size is reported as large 200-300kb but they are missing the pixel sizes and when opened they are tiny.

Are others finding the same?

The Lighter Side / Larks Rise to Candleford
« on: Sunday 27 January 08 22:01 GMT (UK)  »
Having read the book as a youngster I have not been watching the new BBC series. If you don't have it in your country yet, I'm sure you soon will.

I was visiting tonight and caught my first glimpse of it. The reason I mention it is that the costumes are fantastic. Set indeterminately about 1905 it really demonstrates the leg of mutton sleeves sitting comfortably with less fashionable dress, and the wealth of colours would be a great reference for restores.

There was a topic last week about purples - everything available from lilac to purple blue.

Recommended watching.
