Have you seen the original army document which gives William's date of birth? It might be worth checking in case there is an error with the date. Similarly with the 1791 christening. There could be a transcription error in one of the documents.

Regarding the brother James who is in the same battalion ... have you seen his army record to check if it tallies with the 1790 christening you believe is James? If it does I would tend to think that there must be an error. Mistakes happen.

Good suggestions - thanks. Yes, the army record has been checked, and I've looked at the parish register original. Checking James' army record is next on my list - as you say, if his birth date tallies with the register, that would help. (Though I'm assuming James is a brother - don't know for sure).

I fear that, unless another William turns up, I'm never going to be sure about this one!

. Thankyou for this. No Brundish or Brandish family coming up in the records. I think Fressingfield William must be mine, though the difference in birth date leaves a question mark.

Norfolk is fairly well covered by PRs on Familysearch, FreeREG and the Norfolk Transcription Archive: http://www.genealogy.doun.org/transcriptions/
Unsure if you have tried any of these?

Thankyou. Have just looked at the site. I should be requesting a look-up for Redenhall-with-Harleston, apparently (subject line amended accordingly).  Unfortunately there don't seem to be many documents available for the parish, and none covering the years I'm interested in.

I'm trying to trace William Brundish (or Brandish) who, according to his army records, was born 19th November 1794. He usually gave his place of birth as Fressingfield, but Harleston, nearby but in Norfolk,  is also mentioned. As I've outlined in a previous post, I've found a William Brundish in Fressingfield, but christened in June 1791.
He may have a brother James, as a James Brundish was in the same battalion. The Fressingfield William does indeed have a brother James, christened in 1790.
I've not found any other candidates in Suffolk, and it's tempting to assume that this is "my" William, but why the discrepancy in birth date? Three years is a considerable difference!
So if anyone is able to check the Harleston records for me, I'd be grateful, as it'll be a while before I can get back to East Anglia.
(I did find some Harleston records in the Suffolk record office, but as there's another Harleston, near Bury St Edmunds, I'm not sure if they were the right ones).

Lancashire / Re: Hulme Hall, Manchester

There is an article on Hulme Hall on the British History Online website. According to this the hall was split into tenements in its final years and let out to poor people.
Isobel

Thanks Isobel. I would think that this might be the answer. Not as impressive as it sounded, then!

Family History Programs, Tree Organisation, Presentation / Changing father's name
« on: Sunday 11 October 15 18:21 BST (UK)  »
In Family Tree Maker 2014 I have Mary Hilton with two sons, Thomas and James, shown as having the same father, William Cliffe. I've now discovered that Thomas's father was a Richard Worthington. I've entered him as a second "spouse" for Mary, but how do I move Thomas from William to Richard? Thankyou.

Lancashire / Hulme Hall, Manchester
« on: Sunday 11 October 15 17:50 BST (UK)  »
Apparently Hulme Hall in Manchester was demolished in 1840. I have an ancestor born in 1838 for which it's given as his abode. Would that be the hall itself, or could it refer more generally at that date to the surrounding area?

Thank you  - that narrows it down a bit, anyway!

Census and Resource Discussion / Birth dates on. 1841 census
« on: Sunday 11 October 15 09:27 BST (UK)  »
I know that the 1841 census only shows date of birth to the nearest 5 years, but does it go in a specific direction eg if someone is shown as born 1821, was he born 1816-1821, 1821- 1826, or could it be any date in those 10 years? I need to try to narrow it down to find someone with a common name on the1851 census.
