Thank you so much Jorose - I would never have found that. Yes, this is him and his family. That really moves the search on. Very grateful.

Europe / Belgian records 1880s to 1900s

I'm trying to trace Frank Horace Jacobs, born London 1872. He also appears in the records as just Frank or Horace, and occasionally as Jacob. According to his school yearbook, he went to the Antwerp Commercial University in 1887. I've been unable to find him in the 1891 British census and for 1901 have only a possible match - a Frank Jacobs visiting London from Belgium. The age isn't quite right and his place of birth is given as Belgium, though it also says that he is a British subject. So this may or may not be my Frank, who was back in England by Sep 1901, when he got married.
Does anyone have access to census or other Belgian records between 1887-1901 that might help me fill in the gaps, please?

I suspect the answer was you have to unlink the tree from FTM on Ancestry in the tree settings and they the tree becomes available to create a new synchronisation in FTM.
Yes, that's it. Quite simple when you know how! Go to the tree on Ancestry. Immediately to the right of the name of your tree, there's an arrow. Click on that, then on tree settings. From there you can choose to unlink your tree from FTM. You get scary warnings that this can't be undone but if you go ahead and unlink, then go back to FTM and select new tree/ download from Ancestry (I had to close and open the program again to refresh the list), you should find you can now link the tree again.

Ha - solved it. Did what I should have done immediately and typed my query into Google, which took me straight to a forum post that gave me the answer.

Help! I had several family trees on FTM but have lost all the files after a computer catastrophe. My laptop now has a new hard drive and I've put FTM back on there. But when I go to download my  trees from Ancestry, the table that appears says for each of them "not linked to this machine" and "no action available". It is, of course, the same machine, but presumably is being identified as a different one because of all the changes made. I find all the "help" on both Ancestry and FTM very confusing: can anyone explain to me how I can get my trees from Ancestry back onto FTM?

Jim - thankyou so much for this. He was a friend's grandfather and they've never managed to discover more than the basic information. This will mean a lot to her. Thanks again.

Over 60% of WW1 service records were burnt during the WW2 blitz.  If you have been unable to locate them on the sites you mention they will have been part of those destroyed
Ah, that will be why! Thankyou. I'll stop looking! And yes, I've found the medal record, thanks.

I've been looking for service records for the above. I've found the records for his death and the fact that he's listed on the war memorial at Thiepval, but I can't find his name in enlistment or service records. I'm new to military records - should I be expecting to find him in the indexes on Ancestry and Find my Past? Thankyou.

Can you tell us where you found William's army record?   I can't seem to find it under Brandish or Brundish (nor one for James).

Annette

Annette - sorry for the delay in replying - life got in the way! Someone else researched the army records so I don't have a lot of detail, but I do have a copy of a pay list that shows William Brandish and includes his date of birth (because he enlisted under the age of 18) as 19 Nov 1794. He initially joined the 84th Regiment of Foot, then served with the 12th Regiment of Foot. A pay list available on Ancestry shows both William and James Brandish in the 12th Regiment, 2nd Battalion at the end of 1817. As someone else commented, I think I need to find more information on James, to see what date of birth is given and, if possible, where he comes from.
