The Common Room / Searching Old Newspapers
« on: Sunday 29 June 14 15:05 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I this this cutting from a newspaper it shows my Mum collecting tar logs used for the construction of a road. She was born in 1914 and lived in Islington, London. She looks about 6 years old.
The title above the paper cutting is Where Coal is Scarce, its been stuck on card so nothing is readable on the back side.
I have tried searching  Old Newspapers to find the original article with no luck, so I need help please.

London and Middlesex / William Hill
« on: Wednesday 23 October 13 16:45 BST (UK)  »
My GGrandfather William E Hill on the St Mary, Islington Poor Law Removal and Settlement Records he appears as William Edmund Hill age about 70 living at 19 Orchard Street, Islington in May 1914. He was ordered for removal to the Shoreditch Parish.
Previous to that he also resided for 3 years up to 1914 at 222, Hoxton St, Shoreditch and 33 Harman St, Shoreditch.
He also states that he has one son and two daughters address at addresses unknown and had been living apart from his wife (Abigail) for 40 years. Abigail died in 1920 at Walthamstow.

I have not found William on the 1911 Census or his death. After more searches and a couple of no good death certificates I believe that I have found my GGrandfathers death in 1921.
There was a death of William Hill aged 77 in the CLU Infirmary Bow Road. The Infirmary was called City of London Institution which treated the chronically ill from Workhouses around the area. He died on 9th June 1921 and was removed by friends on 11th June.

I have ordered the death certificate and hope there may be a bit more information.

Does anybody know how I can find out who his friends would be?
Are there any crematoriums records on line as there appears to be no record of him on Deceased on line?

Somerset / John Lando death 1846 Tavistock
« on: Thursday 29 August 13 16:35 BST (UK)  »
I am trying to find where my wife's ancestor John Lando parents came from. On all the Scottish census's from 1851 he was British but born in Genoa, Italy.

Having not found any birth info for him in Italy to date I am now trying to trace his Father in Britain. There is a John Lando death in 1846 in Tavistock, Devon, but I cannot find him on the 1841 census.

Does anyone have any information on this person ie his age at death and where was he in 1841.

Hertfordshire / Ashridge House Maternity WW2
« on: Saturday 13 April 13 14:16 BST (UK)  »
My Brother in Law was born at Ashridge House Maternity Hospital (Hertfordshire) in 1941. His parents lived in Chingford, Essex at the time.
I have found out that expectant mothers attending Charing Cross Hospital, London would be sent to Ashridge Park about a week before the birth of a child was expected and remained there for a minimum of two weeks afterwards. This was in order to keep the mothers and babies out of the heavily bombed areas for a period of time.

Is any other information available especially photographs please?

Free Photo Restoration & Date Old Photographs / Kitchen to Lounge
« on: Sunday 11 November 12 17:12 GMT (UK)  »
This photograph is of very poor quality, could someone please try and improve the quality.

This room was the kitchen with a butler sink on the left hand side with window above. I was give the photograph by the person who modified the 18c cottage in the 1960's. Behind the old electrical socket was an old 18c oven which was demolished during the modifications, I could have cried when I heard this.

Has anybody got a programme to add brickwork to our Cottage. We have no old photographs of our Cottage only modern showing either painted brickwork or rendered.
The front elevation has become the rear over the years so I have attempted to produce the original elevations. The Cottage is very low the door on the rear elevation is only 1500mm high (4ft 10inches in old money) and is still in use as an internal door.

Technical Help / Double Letters
« on: Sunday 04 March 12 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
When I type any thing in Word or Windows Mail many of the letters appear twice. I have a wireless key board and I have had this problem for a while now.

What can cause this?

The Lighter Side / Copying Other Peoples Certificates
« on: Sunday 15 January 12 15:16 GMT (UK)  »
I gave a cousin a copy of our family tree which I had researched over several years. He then gave it to his son who has put the tree onto A******RY complete with copies of all the actual BMD's I purchased and other information I produced.

He did not ask my permission and on some items he has put obtained from me, not my A******RY name which he does not know.

His tree is private but several people have got access to it. I know that private trees can be accessed as mine was a few years ago so I quickly removed lots of information.

What can I do?
