You will have noted from other posts that 'Irish' doesn't mean Irish. They have lumped Irish, Welsh and Scottish together. You would be as well looking for a Welsh or Scottish connection for yiur freckles.

familysearch.org has a lot of images of Welsh marriage bonds. The volume of St Davids bonds for 1784-87 seems to there. Not indexed but, with a bit of patience, you may be able to find your way to the right one.

We stopped off at Canisbay Old Church on the way to the Orkney ferry at Gills Bay. The grave is in the 'new' section of the immaculate kirkyard. Probably it will not tell you anything you do not know already.

The Iberian link dates back to the end of the last Ice Age c. 10,000 years ago (bit more distant in time than the Spanish Civil War) when the western parts of the British Isles (Cornwall, Wales, Ireland, etc.)  were repopulated by people travelling along the Atlantic coast. I don't know if any were callled Jose, but you never know.

Have you looked for them on the Welsh Newspaper section of the National Library website? Casualties were often reported in local papers.
