The Common Room / How long must a spouse be missing before one can remarry?
« on: Friday 27 January 23 08:59 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I found my great-grandmother in the 1921 Census living with a man called John O'Reilly and the two are recorded as husband and wife, however I know they didn't marry until 1923. They were in their late 30s/early 40s - so not young sweethearts or anything - and I'm wondering why they would record themselves as married when they weren't.

My great-grandmother, Rose, had been married as a 17 year old in 1895, Glasgow to an English soldier named William Houghton and was still recorded as his wife in the 1901 census, however I assume he died sometime after that before 1904/05. I've never been able to find a death cert for him however (because his name was so common).

John was also previously married, I think to a woman named Eliazbeth Reilly, but again, I've never found a death cert for her.

So I'm wondering, in the 1910s/20s, how long did a spouse need to be missing (say in war?) before they could be assumed dead - or how long did a couple need to be seperated before they could divorce?

Hi all,

Please help me decipher the usual residence of this person please! I know the place of death was a hospital but her usual residence is different to that of her husband so I'm wondering why...

Scotland / 'Wife' in 1921 Census but not married until 1923??
« on: Saturday 21 January 23 16:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

I recently found my great-great-grandmother Rose Ann Hannah in the 1921 Census as 'Rose Ann O'Reilly.' She was living with her 'husband' John O'Reilly, from Cavan, in Blythswood, Glasgow. However, I know they didn't get married until 1923 - so why would they have registered themselves as husband and wife in the 1921 Census?

They weren't young - although Rose says she was 39 in 1921, I know she was actually 43. And John was 38 (correct age in the census). Rose had been married to an English soldier previously - they married when she was 17 in 1895 and had three known children together (one died, and I cannot find any info on the other two after the 1901 Census). She then had my great-grandfather in Belfast, NI in 1905 (he was 'found wandering' and placed in an orphanage by the authorities - he never knew his mother). His father was not known. I've posted about this before in RootsChat.

John was also married before, to a woman named Elizabeth Reilly - although I'm not sure when she died (I can't find them in 1911).

I'm wondering why Rose and John stated they were married in the 1921 Census - any ideas?

Hi all,

I just got this photo sent to me - it's of my great-great-grandparents John and Annie Gallagher. It's quite blurry - I wonder if anyone is able to make it a bit clearer?

Thank you.

Armed Forces / Deciphering a WWI record
« on: Wednesday 10 February 21 20:34 GMT (UK)  »
Hi all,

This is the WWI record of my great-great granduncle James. He died of his wounds in September 1916 but I was wondering what all the other details under 'Particulars of Awards' mean? Or where could I find more information about it?

Thank you.

Hi all,

Can you help me with this cause of death? I know the first line is Influenza, and the third is Heart Failure ... but what does it say in between that?

Hi all,

I would love some help in deciphering what this 6-year old boy died of? His place of death was an 'isolation hospital'?

Thanks in advance!

Down / Hannah's from Downpatrick?
« on: Monday 17 August 20 10:07 BST (UK)  »
Hi all,

My ancestor George Hannah was born in 1780 in County Down. He enlisted in the army in Glasgow on 17 July 1798 and on his record it was stated he came from the parish of Tyrowley in or near the town of Downpatrick in the County of Down. I cannot find any info on a parish of Tyrowley in Down (only one in Mayo). I wonder if anyone is able to help me? I'd love to know where the family came from (George and his family settled in Scotland from the 1840s).

Thanks you!
Katelyn
