Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / Re: What do you think this name is?

If it's a church wedding, I wonder if it might be worth contacting the relevant county records office/archive where the original register has been deposited, and asking them to check what the original register says.  Given that you can give them the date, place and entry no on the register, I'd have thought that most Records Offices would do that for free.

I've just had a reply, they've told me the name is Thomson Carter. Thanks again for the idea!

Details of the 1861 are:

Union Workhouse, Whickham Market, Suffolk
E C, W Pauper, unmarried, 26 or 21(female col), general servant , b. Friston, Suffolk

It is a fair way from the Hoxne area though  :-\

Yeah just looking at a map, it is a fair way. I'll still give it a look over when I can though cause she has to be somewhere.

The name is Thomason Carter.

Thanks. I still can't find anything for a "Thomason Carter" ever being in Suffolk or Norfolk though.

Just my two penn'orth, I'd say that it said Thomson Carter too.

But of course, that's a GRO certificate, so all you've got is a transcript, albeit relatively contemporary.

Alternatively, or if it's a register officer or registrar attended wedding, the local registry will have their copy of the original register and you might be able to sweet talk them into just checking what the father's name is.

Thanks a lot for the suggestion! I've just emailed their local record office, and I'll let you know if I hear anything back (:

I did see an E.C. in another Sufolk workhouse on the 1861 - 26 and a servant. Whickham Market - RG9/ 1174/98/33 I'm not up on Suffolk so  maybe you could check it out.

Interesting, I haven't seen this. I'm not able to check at the moment (I'm in between Ancestry subscriptions while I follow up other family leads) but I will ASAP. Thanks Gadget!

There is a Chelsea entry in 1871, Elizabeth Carter, 45, Alexander, 12, Rosetta, 11, and George 3. Can I take it that this is not them?

The 1901 states she was born in Upton, and they have a child Alfred (3).
The 1911 states the same, Alfred now being a Tailor and is 13 years old.

For 1871 I've gone with a census at Stradbroke, Suffolk at the Stradbroke Union Workhouse. Eliza Carter is with daughters Elizabeth, Rosa and Harriet (by working back from the marriage and the two following censuses, I don't think there's any other possibility for my Rosetta from this family).

Just found a September 1862 birth for a Rosetta Carter at Hoxne. I wonder if that's her?

Malky

The RD for Stradbroke (where they were in 1871)  is Hoxne, Malky. so it looks like the correct one.

I don't see Eliza (b. circa 1838) or daughter Elizabeth(b. circa 1858)  in 1861 so far.

Gadget

Yes If I'm right about the mother being Eliza, then this is the right birth. I have the certificate, and it only has Eliza Carter as a parent - no mention of a father, or Eliza having a maiden name (which is why I've been confused by the marriage certificate having the father's surname as Carter).

Hi

Could it be Thomas or Carter, with no first name, suggesting that Rose did not know him.

I love this suggestion, It's quite possible. Thank you Gadget.

My thoughts for the 1861 is guesswork, so I'd love to know what you think. George Corbyn is head of the house, with wife Harriet (formerly Carter). I believe her to be the mother of Eliza, as at the bottom, the last name for the house is "Elizabeth Carter" and listed as "wife's granddaughter". I suspect Elizabeth Carter is the first child of Eliza Carter (as seen in the 1871 census), and Eliza Carter was born to Harriet long before her marriage. There's also a baptism for Eliza to Harriet in the right place in 1837 (Harriet would have been 16 when she had Eliza). No sign of where Eliza was during 1861, but I have her as a servant in 1851.

I thought Thomson too before I read Jen's reply.  :)

Have you checked earlier generations/other Carter family to see if one of them is Thom(p)son? Perhaps Rosetta fibbed on her marriage certificate about her father - she may have borrowed the name of one of her other relatives. Thom(p)son is an unusual name to invent as a first name.
Alternatively the vicar may have asked what is the name of your father and she said "Thompson" meaning it was his surname, but the vicar assumed it was his first name. I have heard of similar scenarios.

Thanks for that Ruskie, both scenarios I hadn't considered. I haven't found too much family before Rosetta (and what I do have I can't confirm yet) but there is no Thompson names/surnames about. I'll keep it in mind though, and your idea about her possibly meaning Thom(p)son as the surname as well.

Do you have Rosetta in the 1871 and 1881 censuses to see who she is with? Similar with her mother Eliza?

Yes I have them together at the workhouse in 1871 and in 1881 Rosetta is listed as a servant, so not much help there. I can't find Eliza in 1861 but I believe I have her mother and another child together (Eliza's mother being Harriet Corbyn (formerly Carter). This is just guess work though, based on other things).

In the 1891 census, it states she was 26 and born in Fressingfield.

Malky

Yes I know, but with the marriage being a few months before this, I believe the wedding age is correct as it goes with my 1871 and 1881 birth years. Also her age in 1901 was 34, so maybe husband Walter James Saunders didn't keep track of her age very well.

I've lost all sign of everyone except their child Stanley after 1901 (James Saunders in 1901), who ends up in Gravesend by 1911. This is the biggest family mystery I hope to solve, but that's for another time!

Could the bride's father be Thomson Carter?

Regards,
Jen.

Hi Jen, it may be, but using Ancestry I couldn't find any Thomson (or Thomason or Thompson) in the area (Fressingfield, Suffolk) for the time periods. But if other people agree, I might use the name instead of Thomas until I one day get to the bottom of this. Thanks.

I'd like others' opinions on the name of the bride's father. I've accepted it as Thomas Carter, but I've been unable to find any Thomas Carter (or similar name) with daughter Rosetta (Rose, Rosa) Carter either.

Because there's what appears to be an "ou", "on" or "au" in between Thomas and Carter, I'm not at all sure the name is Thomas.

I believe Rosetta was born in a workhouse to mother Eliza Carter (which I'd believed was her maiden name) in 1862, and there was no partner for Eliza in those nearby years, which confuses me more about this father's name (I was expecting a "father unknown" or one with a different surname).

Thanks for any help!
