Lancashire / Re: Gold miners daughters Dorothy & mary Elizabeth CORNTHWAITE
« on: Sunday 21 April 24 16:31 BST (UK)  »
Update the daughters Mary E  Dorothy were born in Pietermaritzburg natal south Africa
& There was a still birth in 1909
In south Africa too

The parents were not married until 1915 when James Cornthwaite was diagnosed with TB so probably in order for Emma to get widows pension
No records found in south Africa for the births but the children were baptized with surname Cornthwaite on return
The last child born over a year after James death
May have been child of Emma's future husband Fred SMITH

1 grandchild was very shocked to find that the grandmother had had births before and after marriage . Other grandchildren refused to believe it at the time .

The Lighter Side / Re: Myths debunked when doing family histroy.
« on: Sunday 21 April 24 14:40 BST (UK)  »
My grandmother told me that she'd met granddad at a wedding and that they were some kind of cousins

I've been looking for connections for ages .

Finally found his elder sister marrying her cousin ...so they were related by marriage .!

I ve just helped a relative change her home person to herself and link her results to her tree...thru lines take a few days to appear after changes are made so hopefully we will see results soon .

Good luck .

Btw another.tip is to make sure that everyone has the next generation up on their tree sometimes thru lines  don't show to great grandparents but appear thru their parents

The Common Room / Re: Criminal records
« on: Sunday 21 April 24 12:56 BST (UK)  »
Thank you for pm
I can now access the free newspapers
View which are on FindMyPast

& Now understand the note on criminal record about 14 days & 5 years

Alice  was remanded in prison for 14 days before being sent to reformatory
School

She committed the crime in August of stealing opera glasses and other articles 1880
according to another newspaper her accomplice was Edward George JONES who was sentenced to hard labour

The fact that she ran away from Liverpool to London & Chatham
Suggests she may still have had relatives there

id seen the description of Alice + crimes of larceny + felony but not what shed stolen or who the crimes were against .

like ashton I too wondered if the couple had moved away from chatham kent to escape disgrace .

i wonder what brought "george daniel mansfield " to west derby lancashire + why the couple chose to have baby in Ireland .

he's a real mystery.

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Brickwall Connections, DNA matches
« on: Saturday 20 April 24 22:00 BST (UK)  »
that seems very feasible to me

are the matches showing up on thru lines +/or have you worked out exact relationship to you ...the mother + son will be interesting to compare cms tho small amounts would be expected at 5th cousin or 4c 1r level
