Devon Completed Lookup Requests / Simonds Down?
« on: Friday 21 September 07 12:27 BST (UK)  »
On an 1851 Census image, I have an ancestor's place of birth as being 'Simonds Down, Devon'. Only problem is, I can't find any trace of it or variant spellings. Does anybody have any idea where this might be?

Thanks

Occupation Interests / Apprenticeship records - 1840's/1850's Drapers
« on: Friday 07 September 07 08:45 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone

Does anybody know if records are likely to exist for Draper's apprenticeships in Sussex in the late 1840's and early 1850's?

The apprentice I'm interested in is Allan Tipper, who was an apprentice to Henry Gadd, Linen Draper, in the 1851 census.

Thanks

Sussex / Advice please - brick wall
« on: Sunday 02 September 07 14:43 BST (UK)  »
Hi everybody.

I've reached a bit of a brick-wall in my research, so I thought I'd see if any kind souls on the Rootschat boards have any ideas that I don't (many heads being better than just one)

I've got a christening for a Charles Tipper, 1793, Rogate, Sussex off the IGI. His parents were James Tipper and Elizabeth - for whom I have many other children, christened between 1782-1803. The family seems to, by-and-large, have stayed in Rogate - as most of his sons appear there on the 1841 and 1851.

Bearing this in mind, I think James Tipper's burial could be in this thread http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,251471.0.html - the one aged 64 in 1821. The James Tipper aged 40 in 1823 is a son. I haven't had any luck finding the marriage of James and Elizabeth, or any possible christening. Haven't had any luck with a will for James either, but that could largely be down to being thousands of kilometres away from the records in Australia.

The Tipper name in Sussex seems to go back further than the late 18th C but at this stage I feel pretty stuck. I know it's possible that the records I need just aren't there, but .... any ideas?

Thanks

Australia / NSW Association - ESRSS and A?
« on: Thursday 23 August 07 10:38 BST (UK)  »
Hi everybody

Recently found a relative of mine who died in 1967. Among the various funeral notices was one inviting members of the "ESRSS and A" to attend the funeral, and stating that my rellie was a member.

Has anyone ever heard of the ESRSS and A? For what it's worth I think it would have to be Sydney based...

Thanks

The Common Room / Contacting Distant non-researching relatives
« on: Wednesday 22 August 07 02:32 BST (UK)  »
Hi everybody,

In the course of my studies, using things like WWII service records, death notices in the paper and electoral rolls, I think I have tracked down living descendants of some of the branches of my tree. Do you think it's acceptable to contact these kind of relatives (who, to my knowledge, are not researching their family history)? Or is it likely to be viewed in a "breach of privacy" manner? If any Rootschatters have had expieriences with this kind of thing, I would love to hear about it.

Thanks

Sussex Completed Lookup Requests / Burial Index Lookup - James Tipper - COMPLETED
« on: Tuesday 21 August 07 13:47 BST (UK)  »
Hello everyone - hope you're all enjoying your 3 free Ancestry days (I wasn't seen by my household for hours at a stretch)

Could someone with access to the NBI have a look for a name for me? I'm after James Tipper (of Rogate, Sussex) who died sometime before 1841

Thanks

Hi everyone  :)

I was wondering if someone with access to either the 1891 or 1901 Census could do a search for me? Unfortunately the names are a bit common and the information a bit thin on the ground but I'm after the following:

Eliza (or, on occasion, Elizabeth) WATTS, born sometime around 1883, daughter of Charles WATTS. She was living in Holborn, London in 1905 when she was married.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Perthshire / Moirlanich Longhouse
« on: Thursday 02 August 07 06:35 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.

On an 1863 Marriage certificate, I have a Peter Robertson, son of Duncan Robertson, residing at Moirlanich, Glenlochay, in the Parish of Kenmore. In an effort to find out exactly where Moirlanich was, I put the name into google and discovered Moirlanich Longhouse, a historic attraction of the same name (http://www.nts.org.uk/Property/80/), that was inhabited by three generations of the Robertson family.

I was wondering if anybody on Rootschat knew if Moirlanich refers only to the house or also the surrounding area, and if anybody has any more information.

Thanks
