Family History Beginners Board / Re: Trevor Davidson Southgate and the Southgate family

Yes, I have read the divorce papers and that's where the issues emerged!
TDS's first wife (the divorced one) later became a novelist under the name Jane England: her first four novels are heavily autobiographical and really have it in for her ex-husband. Fascinating stuff. I think he was quite a difficult man to live with -- not violent. just withdrawn and morose.

He was a retired golf club secretary at the time of his death -- I haven't yet been able to trace the golf club. I traced the family of the man to whom probate was granted (not a relative) and they were quite spooked and knew nothing about it. I haven't actually seen his will, have you found a link?

Hello again!
I would like to know what he was doing between 1933 and 1963 -- I mean what work.
I would also like to know more about the Southgate family. If I could find photographs that would be brilliant.
There are as indicated issues around his first marriage which I would like to know more about.

Thank you for your interest, and of course for your help earlier today!

Family History Beginners Board / Trevor Davidson Southgate and the Southgate family

OK, this is my second new topic but I only joined about 2 hours ago, and I just don't know where this topic would fit. Trevor Davidson Southgate (TDS) does appear on some family trees on Ancestry (ie, was Mundia) but I have messaged the owners and they know less about him than I do. His father Trevor Bishop Southgate (TBS) married his first cousin Sophie Southgate. I have quite a bit of information about the Southgate family at this date but would love more. TBS went to Brazil to work where Sophie died. TDS was in the Essex Regiment, the Machine Gun Corps and the Royal Flying Corps during WW1, and subsequently worked for the United Africa Company. I have no information on him from 1933 until his death in 1963. I do have information on his two marriages but some aspects of this might be sensitive to living persons so I won't include it here. Any Southgate family members?

Yes indeed. In 1841 William was living with Thomas Greaves in Biggin, Hartington, and was a cowkeeper -- other persons (as noted above) were Isaac, Hannah and Sarah Greaves -- who I now must presume were half-siblings. An interesting suggestion above that Thomas may have been married to someone else, although I haven't so far located a marriage.

Thank you guys! Sarah went on to have a fairly tough life, it would appear. In 1841 and 1851 she is a seamstress living in central Derby but in 1861 (aged 70) she was a charwoman. She only had a daughter Mary living with her (factory silk worker). As far as I can see William went to live with his father. I wonder what happened to the other (Hurd) children?

avm228, that sound you just heard was a scream of excitement. Oh yes, that's it, isn't it? How interesting that the family then waver to and fro between the two surnames. This is my husband's family line I am doing: I have had lots of illegitimate children on my own side but they always stuck to their mother's surname. I will now go away and see if I can track down Sarah any further...

Many many thanks!!

Hi Millipede
This IS in the Derby area. I think William (??Hurd) Greaves is the son of Thomas Greaves who had a pub at Hartington (b. 1781). I don't have a wife's name for Thomas so I am very interested to hear of a Sarah Hurd, which would fit nicely!
Hi avm228
I am sure Betsey would be the daughter of William Greaves Hurd by his first wife Mary (Palfreman). They married in 1844.
The family are all in the Leics/Derby corner around Shardlow and Castle Donington for generations until John went south to be a stableman at Chiswick House (owned by the Duke of Devonshire, which is probably the connection).
