Hi I'd love to have a copy of this certificate as I'm building up a One Place Study of Enfield, Middlesex at the moment. All information on the site will be totally free of charge to anyone visiting it.

It's early days so far regarding my website but hopefully there will be a lot more information soon. www.enfieldmiddlesex.com

Hi Ron,

Thanks for that information, sorry that I hadn't realised until now that you'd posted the reply.

When you read it was by coroners order you or should I say, I thought the worst. I do much prefer this ending to my finding. I'm sure his grandchildren were pleased to have him buried locally.

Hi I'm just curious as all my family lived in Enfield and you never know we could be relatives.

Have you seen his death certificate as that might give you some help. It might be worth checking out the Enfield Gazette as they may have put a death notice in and then leave all their names for you.

I can't speak for the register in question but I can tell you that on registers that I've read, it sometimes includes a parents name or even both and some even give addresses.

Have you tried posting this message on the relevant county board and you could ask anyone if they've looked your church register up in the past to see if they know what details might be included?

Sorry couldn't be of more help, I often go to the records offices in London usually SOGS and LMA but I don't plan to revisit them for a couple of weeks now as I was only there the other day.

If the baby was stillborn it wasn't law to have stillborns registered until 1926 as they were concerned that unscrupupolous midwives and maternity home proprietors colluded in disposing of live babies after declaring them to be stillborn (My Ancestor Was Bastard by Ruth Paley I purchased my copy at SOGS).

My father always talked about a baby that was born before him, it was given the same name as him, but as it didn't survive and tradition was to hand down the name to first born, my father next born was given the dead baby's name. I've never found a death entry and this book explained it all to me cos my dad was born in 1919. I do believe it was stillborn as my uncle tells me his father always said that the doctor didn't slap the baby hard enough in his opinion!

Hi I actually purchased the book from the Quakers Bookshop not far from Kings Cross. (No I'm not a quaker, I was just curious) I love Elizabeth Fry (Betsy) and was really surprised to see she was a Quaker and that there were a few different biographies of her life.

The book that I am reading actually has a family tree inside it of both the Gurney and Fry lines, she had 11 children! The Gurney line goes back to 1692 the book is called

Elizabeth Fry a biography and was written by June Rose and cost me £4-75 ISBN: 0 85245 260 8

I think the address to contact for the book would be -
the Literature Secretary, Quaker Homes Service, Friends House, Euston Road, London, NW1 2BY, UK  - as I'm sure this must be the same place as I purchased my copy from.

If you have problems getting the book let me know and next time I go up London I'll see if I can pick you up a copy, probably wouldn't be for a few weeks yet though.

Hi I was interested in this message thread as I am currently reading a biography.

Did you know that Elizabeth Fry the very famous prison reformer's maiden name was Gurney? Her family were Quakers and in her biography it shares her journals and those of her sisters. It has made lots of reference to family members that they have visited.

I was interested to read that she courted the son of the founder of Lloyds bank.

Hi when you say Judge Jeffries, do you mean the notorious 'Hanging Judge Jeffrey' who became famous for hanging political rebels?

I was at Forty Hall in Enfield, Middlesex on Saturday and the lady that was running the museum that day mentioned Judge Jeffrey but for the life of me I cannot remember the connection she gave me with Enfield. It may have been something like the last hanging was in Enfield.

What I can tell you is, there has always been a rumour that my family were in some way connected to him, but having found no one hanged, I can only presume that this story might be behind the myth.
http://www.spiritencounters.tictacwebsites.com/blackcarriageofenfield.html My family lived in Ponders End, so perhaps it was just as simple as having seen his coach.... eerie or what?

I'm doing a lot of research for the Enfield area at the moment for a one place study so I will keep my eyes open for you.

I must say I actually drove in to the Pastoral Centre in the summer as I could see its magnifigance from the road... it really is a wow factor place. I followed the link that was left for you and it really doesn't show it to its best.

I live in South Mimms, not far from London Colney, if you want any pictures just give me a shout, as I'd love an excuse to go back and take some pictures. We didn't even get out of the car but we could feel the awe and wow factor, it's a beautiful place.

Being a young child and sent there to live, I can just imagine those childrens eyes popping out of their heads in wonder!
