To Anabanana
Hello I am also on Ancestry. I have been able to match a few cousins who changed their name to Dewar after leaving Scotland. I also have a y-dna match to someone in England who can trace their family back to Glenelg.
I am related to Catherine Mcleor who married Alexander Chisholm according to a booklet by Donald Keith Dewar

I was able to match one Mclure who has a paper trail back to Glenelg.
I am still looking for another to confirm our findings.
I would also like to find someone from Ontario, Canada as it is believed quite a few went there.
Thanks,
Rod

According to most lists there are no church records for western Inverness- shire and the Isle of Skye earlier than 1793 ( and only two Mclure baptisms from 1793 to 1800)
This is a problem because Angus and Annabell had already left for the new world. You can read about them by doing
Google "family history books" this will take you to a page where you can search for books, enter "Galder" and you will see two books by Donald Keith Dewar.
"Dewar: tracing our family tree" is more up to date than The Mcleors of Galder Glenelg
There are no sources given in this book just a list of names of the people who had contributed information.

Hello
Thanks Skoosh, that sounds like the right area.
John, the Major John I refer to was born about 1749 and he died 5 May 1826.
He had sons "Red" Angus, Donald ( who died age 2) , Archibald, Alexander and Donald.
Daughters Christina, Kate , Mary, Nancy, Sally, Lizzie.
could this be your family?

"Lulan" passenger list 1848 shows Macleans,
Hugh 46
Jessie 46
Marion 14
Catherine 12
Donald 8
Mary 6
according to their family tree they were from Dunganachy,
Benbecula but I can't find them in the 1841 census.
