Glamorganshire / Cwmgelli Cemetery
« on: Sunday 16 October 05 13:49 BST (UK)  »
Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help with this query?

I have found a death notice in the "South Wales Daily Post" for the 16th October 1930 for my uncle, Archibald Wilson, (1903 - 1930). It says that his funeral would be at Cwmgelli Cemetery, Swansea on the 17th October 1930. (It also says "Gentlemen only welcome"; which is rather mysterious!).

Anyway, I am wondering if there is a headstone for him, and if there is any way of checking? I wondered if there was an index of graves or something? (I am in Herts. & so its a long way for me to come & look). He committed suicide, & I'm not sure if he would have been given an unmarked grave because of that...

Hoping that someone can help.

Romilly

Hi Laura,

Sadly, I have no further information. All I have to go on is my Grandmother's birth certificate. She was also a Margaret Rees(!) and was born in Welcome Street, Morriston, Swansea on the 6th November 1866. The informant on her certificate is her mother, Margaret Rees, (maiden name Rees!). She is unable to sign her name on the certificate, but has made a cross instead.

She married my Grandfather, Evan Rees, (a Copperman) presumably in about 1858, because her eldest son, John was born in Aberavon in 1859. Margaret Rees, (Senior) was also born in Aberavon, but Evan Rees was born in Morriston in approx 1838.

I have found my Great Grandparents on the 1861/71/81 and 1891 Censuses for Wales. I've also found Evan Rees's parents, (Evan and Anne Rees) but have been unable to find anything further for my Aberavon Margaret Rees. I don't know if she was any relation to the Evan Rees that she married. The children's names of Evan & Margaret Rees might give some clues, they were: John (1859) Sarah Ann (1862) Margaret (1866) George (1868) Elizabeth (1872) Selina (1877) and William (1879).

I've looked in vain for a birth entry for Margaret Rees, Snr, but suspect that she probably wasn't registered. On the Censuses, Margaret Snrs date of birth is given variously, as being 1837, 1838 and 1839!

Many thanks for looking, but as you say...I expect there were an awful lot of Rees's in that part of Wales!!!

Best Wishes, Romilly

Hi,

You can look the GRO References up either on Ancestry.com, or on the 1837 On-line site. You have to suscribe to them though, whereas if you visit either the Family Records Centre or your local Records Office, you can look them up for no charge.

Hope that helps, Romilly.

Hi,

Although the Coroner's Reports are gone, you might still find a death entry, or article about the death in the "South Wales Post" Newspaper. I emailed Swansea Central reference Library on:

central.library@swansea.gov.uk

and they sent me a death notice for the 1930 death that I was enquiring about. And if they can't find anything, you could always try the British Newspaper Library at:

The British Library
Newspaper Library
Colindale Avenue
London
NW9 5HE

Tel: 0207 412 7353
Fax: 0207 412 7379
E-mail: newspaper@bl.uk
Website: www.bl.uk/collections/newspaper

Hope that helps.

Cheers, Romilly

Hi,

I recently contacted the Swansea Archives Dept. to try to obtain copies of a Coroner's Inquest Report into the suicide of an uncle of mine in Swansea in 1930.

Sadly, I was told that the Archives Dept only hold copies of Coroner's Inquest reports from the 1970's onwards. (Apparantly the ones from 1900 - 1970 were water damaged & had to be ditched!

Sorry not to be able to help, but thought you might wish to know this.

Hi,

I wonder if anyone could do an 1841 Aberavon Census Look-up for me please?

Its for my Great Grandmother, Margaret Rees, who was born in Aberavon in (approx) 1837 or '38.

(This is my first post on here, so apologies if this goes to the wrong place!).
