Tyrone / Looking for a possible marriage - James McCANN and Rebecca RICE
« on: Monday 15 December 14 18:14 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with trying to track down a marriage record for my great-great-grandfather, James McCann.

James McCann is listed as the father of the bride in my great-grandparents' marriage record at the church of Drummullen in 1898. His daughter was a Mary McCann who married a Hugh Bell.

I have found a baptismal record in 1876 for a Mary McCann, daughter of James McCann and Rebecca Rice of Drumads that I think is the most likely candidate (though I'm still not 100% sure - my knowledge of NI parishes is still pretty poor).

The thing is, I can't find a marriage record between James and Rebecca. Of course, it's possible they never married - but they are also listed as having had another daughter, Bridget, in 1882 in the parish of Ardboe.

If anyone has any advice as to how I can confirm whether or not this Mary Ann McCann is indeed my great-grandmother, or any other marriage/birth records I may have missed, I would be very grateful.

Many thanks! :)

Ireland / 'First name E' on Parish records.
« on: Monday 15 December 14 12:44 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

A very quick question regarding Irish parish records. On a number of transcripts I see the note 'Father/witness' first name E'. Can anyone tell me what this means?

Many thanks! :)

Derry (Londonderry) / John O'NEILL and Jane McCANN of Ballynenagh
« on: Saturday 13 December 14 13:31 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I am looking for any information I can find regarding my great-great grandparents John O'Neill and Jane McCann. They were married on the 23rd Jan 1895 in the parish of Moneymore. John's address is listed as Ballydawley and Jane's is listed as Ballynenagh. After the wedding they settled on a farm belonging to Jane's mother, Rose Donnelly, in the Loop, Ballynenagh. They had four children, Patrick (my great-grandfather), Charles James, Catherine and Mary Anne. John is listed as 39 years old in the 1901 census, and Jane is listed as 37.

As you can probably tell by Rose Donnelly's surname, Jane was an illegitimate child, the daughter of a Charles McCann. He's listed on John and Jane's marriage record as being deceased. This may have been true, or it may just have been a convenient fiction for his absence. Rose never remarried and actually outlived her son-in-law John by a number of years.

John's father is listed as a Michael O'Neill, but I have yet to be able to track down John's birth record. John is also listed as being a widower but I have not yet been able to find the record of his first marriage.

Any advice or information on John, Jane or any of these other ancestors would be greatly appreciated. As I say, I'm still getting to grips with Irish genealogy, so I've likely overlooked something. Thanks in advance! :)

Shropshire / Elisha HOWELLS and Margaret EDWARDS of Eaton-Under-Heywood
« on: Thursday 11 December 14 10:25 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I'm looking for whatever information I can find regarding my 3xgreat grandparents, Elisha Howells and Mary Edwards.

According to census data, Elisha was born in Eaton-under-Heywood (usually given simply as 'Eaton, Salop'). His birth dates are all over the place, but I believe he was born somewhere in the range of 1795-1806. He was married to Margaret Edwards in Acton Scott on the 12th of June 1829, witnesses an Elizabeth Howells and Richard Bennett.

Margaret is listed as also being born in Eaton in every census except 1881, where her birthplace is listed as 'Glazely'. I believe she was the daughter of William and Margaret Edwards, and that she was baptised in Eaton in 1812. Elisha and Margaret moved around a lot, as evidenced by the birthplaces of their many children: Acton Scott, Chetton, Neenton and Stottesdon.

It appears as if the family finally settled in Stottesdon, as the family are there from the 1851 census onwards. Elisha and Margaret also had the bulk of their children there, including my great-great grandmother, Martha.

What I've been unable to find is a birth record for Elisha. There are a lot of Elisha Howells born in Eaton-under-Heywood (it seems a very common name in the area), but none in the right date-range. Further complicating matters, it seems like there are many variants of the surname (I have seen the variants: 'Holes', 'Howles', 'Howels', 'Howells', and even in one case 'Harvelle').

If anyone can shed any light on the situation I'd be most grateful. :)

Shropshire / George and Maria DAVIS of Highley, Shropshire
« on: Sunday 07 December 14 13:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all,

I've been trying to find more information on my 3xgreat grandparents, George Davis and Maria Davis (maiden name unknown).

I have quite a lot of information about them, but I've as of yet been unable to piece it all together to get any further up the tree.

George Davis was born in Much Wenlock c1813. Maria is listed as having been born in Highley Shropshire. The couple have settled there as of the 1851 census (names transcribed as 'Dobis' on Ancestry).

I do not know when or where they were married but they had their first child, Sarah, c1847 so I assume it would have been not too long before that. Their second child, George, came c1848/9. George Jr is my 2xgreat-grandfather.

Maria died in 1858, in Highley. George does not appear to have remarried or had any more children.

In the 1851 there is a Thomas Morrey listed as living with them, age 75 also born in Much Wenlock. He is recorded as being George senior's uncle and a widower. I assume he would have been the husband of one of George's aunts. There is also an Eliza Walford, visitor, aged 25. I haven't been able to discover any family connection.

So as you can see, I have a fair number of clues, but as of yet I haven't been able to find a marriage record for George and Mary, nor a birth record for either of them. Any suggestions for things I may have overlooked or sources I may have missed would be most appreciated.  :)

Hello all,

I've been looking for a marriage certificate for my 3xgreat grandparents John MONKTON (also spelled MONCKTON) and Sarah POUNTNEY. They were married at St Chad's Church, Pattingham in 1853. It appears as if only the index record of the marriage has been digitised - I believe the marriage record itself is only available at Staffordshire Record Office, in the Pattingham parish records collection.

If anyone could help me find out what is listed on the marriage record I'd be most grateful. I'm particularly interested in the fathers of the bride and the groom, respectively.

Many thanks in advance!  :)

Hello all, just joined the forum, nice to be here.  :)

I'm looking for some help in finding a birth record for a Sarah Pountney, my 3xgreat grandmother, who lists herself in census records as being born in Alveley, Shropshire.

The earliest I can find her is in the 1841/51 censuses, where she's living in Tettenhall, Staffordshire working as a domestic servant. In 1853 she marries my 3xgreat grandfather, a widower by the name of John Monckton and settles with him and his children in Pattingham, Staffordshire.

Her birth year varies wildly from census to census, but it generally falls within 1816-1831. To date I've yet to find any record of a Sarah Pountney born in Alveley.

If anyone can help me or has any ideas of sources I may have missed, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!  :D

Worcestershire Lookup Requests / Seeking Birth/Baptism record of John MONCKTON born c1806
« on: Wednesday 03 December 14 21:11 GMT (UK)  »
Hello all, I've just joined the forum. Nice to be here.  :)

I've hit a bit of a brick wall when researching my maternal grandmother's side of our family tree. I can trace the Monckton line back to my 3xgreat-grandfather, John Monckton. He's very well represented in the census records living initially with his first wife Jane and then later with his second wife Sarah (my 3xgreat-grandmother, ne้ Pountney) in Pattingham, Staffordshire.

He consistently lists his place of birth as Rock, Worcestershire, born around 1806. Although I can find plenty of other Moncktons who list Rock as their birthplace on later censuses, I can't find any birth or baptismal records for Moncktons in Rock near the turn of the 19th century.

I've exhausted every trick I can think of to find a record of John's birth, so any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!  :D
