My birth name and that of my family was Johnson.. On Johns (Johan) marriage cert to Mary E Davies in 1883 it is spelt Johnson. His father documented as Oliver Johnson, carpenter, does not state deceased.
A relative has told me that the name may have been Johnsson, Johanson, and Anglesised when in Wales.

Oh well that narrows it down a bit!! At least I now to concentrate on Olaf in Sweden as a possibility.

Many thanks

Good morning Ian

I will do as you suggest with' wildcard's.. Goodness knows why on the 1911 census it states Sweden as place of birth! The only reason I can think of is the possible changing of boundaries re Norway and Sweden over time. So frustrating!!!

Hi jamcat
Problem is whatever info I put into the Norwegian/Swedish records, it invariably comes up with 0 results. Clearly I am doing something wrong..
I now have more info from family source -
Oliver (Olaf) Johnsson  carpenter born in Lysekil ? when!!
Children -
Hedvig
Augusta
Emma
Anders or Amandus
Johan Bernhard (my greatgrandfather) who married Mary Elizabeth Trewartha (Davies, Heard, Johnsson)
Any advice would be gratefully received!!!

Regards Ruth

Hello jamcat

Many thanks for info. I have attempted to access the Norwegain census and birth records to confirm that this is my great grandfather. However, I am finding it quite difficult to navigate which I understand is a common problem.  :(

I will, however, continue to persevere having come this far.

Regards

Hi

Yes Johan is recorded as a 'Seaman ?M S' on his marriage cert.. a copy of which I have.  ;D This also ties in with family spoken history which I have proved to be very reliable!  :D

Hi

Does anyone have any hints on tracing Norwegian birth/baptism records. My great grandfather, Johan Bernhard Johanson (Johnson) born abt 1853 in a village outside Oslo according to family hearsay. I have his marriage certificate which records his father as Oliver a carpenter.
He married Mary Elizabeth Davies (mother Mary Jane Trewarthata) in Newport South Wales on 1st October 1883.
I'm also having trouble accessing the Norwegian Cenus!

Many thanks and Happy New Year  :)
