Hello JAP, Ann, and Joe;
Some of what I have already was contributed by a cousin in Scotland. I have no reason to doubt it's accuracy. for example, he reported:
"Extract from the Register of Births and Baptisms for the Parish of Largs.
James Snodgrass - son of John Snodgrass and Mrs. Hutchinson Margaret Tayler (sic) was born at Largs the 27th day of April 1836 ("6" overwritten "7") and was baptised soon after in the Parish Church."
No, we have not found the marriage either but in the above extract "Mrs. Hutchinson" is lined out and replaced by "Margaret Tayler". This proves the connection to me.
The 1861 West Greenock (street name indicipherable) census has my James as a 24 year old blacksmith b. Largs with his wife Agnes (nee Brodie) and sons William 3 and John 1. Agnes and the boys were born Greenock.
Much of our conjecture is based on the 1841 Church Court Largs census. James appears as an orphan living with his grandmother and uncle James. (Perhaps this is why we thought there might be only 2 children).
Thanks to JOEKAR who found James 15 in Greenock in the 1851 census, I now realize that Ann Taylor from the 1841 was the sister of James Taylor rather than his wife.
James S. became a Customs House Officer and he and Agnes show up as such in St. Paul, Kent, England in 1881. Son William (my great grandfather) is with his wife Mary Ann Taylor and her family at St. Philip, Hackney in 1881.
I intend to send for the certificates you all have recommended. Thanks again for your input.
Hedley
