Essex Completed Lookup Requests / 1861/1871 Great Hallingbury Census
« on: Monday 11 February 08 21:57 GMT (UK)  »
I have Robert Beattie and his wife Mary Ann and 5 children (Samuel 13, Robert 11, Eliza 8, Emily 2, and William <1) at 56 Church End in the 1851 Census. Could someone please find them in 1861 and 1871?
I also have Mary Ann alone as a widow at 19 Mildmay Terr. in Chelmsford in the 1881 census. Can you find her in 1891? And locate her male children plus Eliza in 1891 or later?
Thanks.

My cousin Mary tried to send this posting but it didn't take. I'll try for her as an attachment to mine.

Hello JAP, Ann, and Joe;
Some of what I have already was contributed by a cousin in Scotland. I have no reason to doubt it's accuracy. for example, he reported:

"Extract from the Register of Births and Baptisms for the Parish of Largs.
James Snodgrass - son of John Snodgrass and Mrs. Hutchinson Margaret Tayler (sic) was born at Largs the 27th day of April 1836 ("6" overwritten "7") and was baptised soon after in the Parish Church."

No, we have not found the marriage either but in the above extract "Mrs. Hutchinson" is lined out and replaced by "Margaret Tayler". This proves the connection to me.

The 1861 West Greenock (street name indicipherable) census has my James as a 24 year old blacksmith b. Largs with his wife Agnes (nee Brodie) and sons William 3 and John 1. Agnes and the boys were born Greenock.

Much of our conjecture is based on the 1841 Church Court Largs census. James appears as an orphan living with his grandmother and uncle James. (Perhaps this is why we thought there might be only 2 children).
Thanks to JOEKAR who found James 15 in Greenock in the 1851 census, I now realize that Ann Taylor from the 1841 was the sister of James Taylor rather than his wife.

James S. became a Customs House Officer and he and Agnes show up as such in St. Paul, Kent, England in 1881. Son William (my great grandfather) is with his wife Mary Ann Taylor and her family at St. Philip, Hackney in 1881.

I intend to send for the certificates you all have recommended. Thanks again for your input.

Hello Joe, JAP, and Ann
Thank you all for your enlightened research and opinions. In our family like so many others we're looking for " a missing link". We've worked our way up to young James and his father John and worked our way down from an Archibald Snodgrass who married a Janet Ralston in the 17th century. But there is still a gap above and alongside John who married Margaret Hutchinson Taylor which you three have generously helped us with. I'll be pouring over your answers with help from my cousins and sending for the documents you have recommended. I have confidence that using your contributions will lead to a better understanding  of the family.
Thanks again,
Hedley

Hello Joekar
I'm glad to hear from you. I'd nearly given up on getting any replies.
We agree on the 1841 Church Court Largs census. James Snodgrass was Margaret Jack's grandson. According to Largs Parish records, young James born Largs Apr. 27 1836 or 37 is the son of John Snodgrass and Margaret Taylor. Margaret had been married previously to a William Hutchinson on Aug. 21 1822 in Largs who died about 1835. We have her born about 1801. We have only one sibling for her - a James Taylor born about 1806.
You show 5 children from the marriage of Margaret Jack and James but no Margaret as we do. How sure are you of these 5 children?
Your 1851 Highland Close, Greenock census is another surprise. We are delighted that you have found 15 year old James Snodgrass (who is likely my gggfather) living with his aunt Ann Taylor who you have living with an Edward Jack and son William. We have assumed that both John Snodgrass and Margaret Hutchinson Taylor (James' parents) were dead by 1841; however, the one you have found in Beith and another we found in Cumbraes, Buteshire are possibilities of his still being alive.
In reference to my original question, have you any way of knowing who the parents of John Snodgrass of Largs were?
Thanks very much for your help so far,
Hedley

John Snodgrass is in the 1837 Largs Directory at 19 Main St. as a wright. No age given. Who were his parents? And is he the John who was the father of James Snodgrass born Largs Apr. 27 1836?
Thanks.
