Thanks jimnix, I’ve asked around and others think it could be “Daphne Moore” too.

I got your message about searching for a marriage between Hannah Moore and a Mr Biddle but no luck so far.

Thanks all, I think it could be Daphne too but she’s not mentioned in Samuel’s will (dated June 1733) so I’m assuming she died young. But then I can’t see a burial for a Daphne Moore.

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / What is her name?

I have a baptism from Birmingham’s St Martin parish registers and I’m struggling to work out the name of Samuel Moore’s daughter, baptised in 1708. It has been transcribed as “Defnah”.

That’s very strange because it looks like my couple but the year is wrong. I have a copy of the marriage license which is dated 1698.

Samuel Moore and Anna Sheepy were married in January 1698 at Curdworth in Warwickshire. I have a marriage license for the couple which gives Anna's residence as Kingsbury and Samuel was of Digbeth in Birmingham.

I have found the baptisms for four of Samuel and Anna's children which all took place at St Martin in Birmingham but I am trying to find out what became of them.

George 1702

Samuel 1705

Defnah (?) 1708 (I'm not sure what her name was supposed to be, the image definitely reads as "Defnah" to me. Could this be the daughter Hannah that was mentioned in Samuel's will?)

Catherine 1710 (my ancestor. She married John Eades in 1729, Joseph Phillips in 1732 and William Joye in 1770. Died in Wellington, Shropshire in 1785)

Anna was buried at St Martin in August 1731 and Samuel was buried in July 1733. From Samuel's will, I know that he owned houses and land in Osset in Essex (I think this may actually be Orsett), Atherstone and several houses on Parke Street in Birmingham. The will also revealed the existence of two more children, "Mary Moore" and "Hannah Biddle", who I would love to be able to find baptisms for if possible.

The will refers to his son George as "George Moore of London... a cutler" so I am assuming George was living in that area by that time.

In 1924, my grandfather and his brother walked from Dudley, Staffordshire to Royston in Yorkshire - about 115 miles. Apparently lots of miners moved about this way in search of work after the First World War, both had served from 1914 and it was hardly the home for heroes they were promised  :'(.  He met and wed my grandmother there, thankfully.

Westmorland / Re: Was Ann Birkett also Hannah Bird ? ?

Could it be possible that "Birkett" has been abbreviated on the original register and has been misread as "Bird"?

I believe Staveley was covered by Kendal parish  ???

9 Oct 1768, Ann Birckett, d. of Matthew and Dorothy Birckett

Alternatively in Kendal...

18 October 1767, Hannah Bird, d. of Philip Bird

I recently found a coroner report for the wife of a 2x great uncle. She was visiting relatives in Sheffield in 1875 but never returned home. Two days later, she was found drowned but no explanation could be given. The saddest part of it was that she was about 20 years old and had a seven month old son and a young husband  :(
