Australia / John Simpson 1857
« on: Monday 12 October 15 13:36 BST (UK)  »
Hi all

I have tried without success to find a birth for John ( my GG-Grandfather). It was said he was born in Aberdeen in 1857 to Henry and ??unknown.

Johns story ( if true) is interesting and I have been able to piece a lot of it through newspaper records and can at least say 1857 is close to an accurate birthdate as I can get. He is in country Victoria as early as 1872 when he is ploughing in a boys comp and by 1875 he is in the adult class so assume 18 in 1875. http://trove.nla.gov.au/ndp/del/article/77176939?

The family tale is that John and his parents Henry and ?? left ??Aberdeen for Australia and both Henry and his wife died on board. The ship put John off at ??Portland Victoria and he was taken in by a family and trained to be a cabinetmaker. (Victorian shipping records are vague and cost to search further)

John married in 1881 and gave his age as 24 and his fathers name as Henry. His first and only son was William John ( which seems to be at odds with naming patterns) there was then a 9 year gap and 3 girls were born to John and Maria - in order - Olive Louise , Myrtle Martha and Evelyn Catherine . Names which have no attachment to Maria or her family.

I have seen a story on a site suggesting Henry absconded in Melbourne Victoria and his wife was Jane Hogg but I haven't been able to confirm it.

I give all this information in the hope a name may pop up that confirms a naming choice. I have not tried ScotlandsPeople as I am not flush with funds and I don't want to waste money on an interface I am not comfortable with. I have tried other sites but I cant match a Henry and a John to any 1861 census that I have seen.

Thank you for taking the time to read this  :)

Added: John died in 1923 in Mt Gambier South Australia

Australia / Charles Blackson/Blacksell Marriage Doc Queries
« on: Friday 02 October 15 11:12 BST (UK)  »
I finally got around to ordering this and it has left me more confused.

Firstly Vic BDM had the entry down as searchable for 1871 when it was 1855. ( and document states 1855)

Secondly the 1st witness is a Richard Blackson - who if family tales and records are correct would have been 90 when witnessed- yet it is a strong clear signature.

Thirdly the 2nd witness was a Mary Ann Munn. Nothing odd about that - until I looked at my own records and my Munn family to find Mary Ann would have been 14 in 1855. I don't find it odd that a Munn would have witnessed this as it was in the Wannon district of Vic which would have been sparsely populated. That the Blacksell/Blackson family married in 35 years later is neither here nor there.

Can Mary Ann be a witness at 14?

Why the lag in search date?

The Blacksell/Blackson name confusion is best left for another thread...it is Blacksell to later generations and even Charles and Richard assume this name themselves at least 1 year earlier in newspaper reports

Hope someone can clear this up  :)

Australia / Finding WW2 Era Births
« on: Tuesday 08 September 15 12:31 BST (UK)  »
I have just found some information , or maybe re-discovered a family story. The basics are that there are/were rumours of another possible step-sister to a family member.

I have just seen newspaper information that names someone as a 3rd party in a divorce case. This occurred after records are deemed to be closed (1928). If a birth resulted after this time , where would I find this information? What record sets are available?

Added: This is in South Australia ( I believe)

Australia / What Drove Non-Registration Of Births?
« on: Tuesday 01 September 15 12:57 BST (UK)  »
This has arisen a few times , just recently on the Burra thread on this board.

I have found a few of my ancestors - my grandmother included-  who were not registered. My grandmother was of Irish Catholic heritage with her grandfather being the 1st immigrant from that side of the family

So it wasn't a ''new' process for this family.

What were the reasons for non-registration of  mainly births? Is It simply a trust and belief in the Mother Church and all it stood for?

Is this Australia wide?

The Common Room / Tristan de Cunha
« on: Monday 31 August 15 14:26 BST (UK)  »
Came across an article and thought it had some different genealogical aspects to it.

Tristan de Cunha is an Island in the middle of nowhere. 2430kms from St Helena to the north and 2800kms to South Africa. Since 1816 when the island was used to claim ownership - to protect St Helena and Napoleon - until 1908 there was very limited immigration to the island.

1. Only 7 Family Names in use

Glass, Green, Hagan, Lavarello, Repetto, Rogers and Swain

2. All Tristans descended form 6 women and 8 men

3. What DNA implications are there?

4. What disease sharing is there ie Parkinsons MS Diabetes etc ?

5. More importantly do you have a link to those names or even to the Islanders?

6. Does it have implications for those wanting to establish a colony on Mars etc?

Corporal William Glass and his family arrived in 1816. Over the years more men arrived , a whaler ' fetched' 5 women from St Helena. All islanders descend from these 5 women and Mrs Glass.

The Common Room / Conflict Between Two Sources
« on: Sunday 16 August 15 12:35 BST (UK)  »
Just came across a conflict between FindMyPast and FreeReg

John Sampson married Sophia Parks in Ulcombe Kent

FindMyPast has 19.10.1833

FreeReg has 13.10.1832

FindMyPast states the record set is England Marriages 1538-1973

FreeReg states its a TR ( transcript)

Which would be more likely the correct one?

The Lighter Side / Digital Registers Not So Smooth
« on: Sunday 09 August 15 02:27 BST (UK)  »
Doing a round of the news sites I came across this which I thought might be of interest to those who want records to go online.

Let me declare I think this is the way to go. But as we will see this can be a minefield for future genealogists.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-08-08/def-con-hackers-can-virtually-kill-people-expert-says/6683190

A rush to make registering deaths digital has made it simple for maliciously-minded hackers to have someone who is alive declared dead by authorities, an Australian computer security expert says.

Getting birth certificates for virtual babies was demonstrated to be even easier than killing off people in the digital world, because registering births online only involves doctors and parents

I had actually thought registering might have been a little harder???

Lincolnshire / George Brighton Long Sutton 1850
« on: Wednesday 05 August 15 11:50 BST (UK)  »
This may not be a Lincolnshire question but as George lived ( as far as I can tell ) most of his life in Lincolnshire I will ask here. (also I couldn't find an appropriate board to place it)

My query is : where was George born?

According to the information I have found and able to verify: George was born approx. 1776 and lived until 1850 where he is listed as dying in Long Sutton. He married Patience Bolland/Bollard in 16.4.1799 in Long Sutton. Deanery = East Elloe ?

The 1841 census lists George aged 65 (1776) in Sutton St Mary, Holbeach with Patience , son John and daughter Caroline. (other children are dead or married by then)

On the 1841 census it states George is born outside county. So not Lincolnshire. But where?

( he is not the Warwickshire George who is listed in the 1851 census)
