Kent / Benenden Casualty Clearing station WW2 - same message twice
« on: Tuesday 25 October 16 19:41 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
Would anyone be able to give me any information about N°7 Casualty Clearing station in Benenden during WW2. Where was it exactly? One of my relatives in the Royal Artillery died there from gunshot wounds (friendly fire??). There was an inquest held at Cranbrook on 22 September 1941 by Eric Clarke, Coroner for the Cranbrook district...
I'd be grateful for any enlightenment.
Thanks a lot.
Best wishes,
PS - Sorry, I think I posted this message in the wrong place at first. I've never yet got the hang of how to send a message properly...

Wow! Thanks so much - that was quick work.
I'm very grateful to have these details about what happened to those poor young recruits.

Yes, maybe. Apparently the Barracks were situated on a straight line from Brighton to London.I also discovered that another way of searching is to "google" Guards Depot, Caterham...

Thanks for your replies...
Caterham is in Surrey (Tandridge district, I think...)
I've just found something here
http://www.caterhambarracks.org.uk
"Chronology" of the Barracks
1940
Drill Shed No.1 destroyed and “A”. Block Married Quarters and the Sergeants’ Mess damaged by enemy action on the 1st September.

Hello,
I wonder if anyone can help me? One of my relatives, Stanley Lisher of the Coldstream Guards was killed on 1 September 1940, together with several others. He is buried or commemorated in Brookwood Military Cemetery. I heard that a bomb hit Caterham Barracks, but there is absolutely nothing to be found on the internet or in the Newspaper Archive. It all appears to be very "hush-hush" (Maybe the Germans weren't to know about it at the time?). Would anyone have any information on this - if so, I'd be very grateful to learn of the circumstances.
Thanks a lot! :)

Devon Lookup Requests / Re: 1912 Hawkchurch? Charles White & Florence Huxford

Thank you so much for all that research. Yes - a very "interesting" family! It would seem that Florence's mother Ann, after having an illlegitimate son, married George Huxford and then had all the other children. Then on 1911 census she describes herself as "single" and is living with James Wareham (the 1891 lodger!) Her daughter Florence obviously married Charles White. I have the birth certificate for her daughter Margaret Dorothy Huxford, born 1902 when Florence was barely 16 years old, but no father mentioned, so I don't know whether Charles White was the father or not... They only married ten years later.
It was very kind of you to go to all t hat trouble. Thank you very much.

Hello,
Yes, I am actually looking for their father's names and would have hoped to have found them in the parish register rather than having to pay (yet another) £9.25 for a gro certificate.

Hello,
I am looking for the marriage entry of Charles White and Florence Mary Huxford, possibly in Hawkchurch or eventually Axminster. I'd be grateful for any help or suggestions.
Thank you
