Armed Forces / Crimea Medals
« on: Saturday 23 November 13 14:41 GMT (UK)  »
I have a private Henry Sherry service number 1339 of the First Dragoons who served in the Crimea for 5mths. I am looking for service medals he may have been issued with.
He joined the Dragoons on the 1st Sept 1854 age 18 and discharged on the 13 Jan 1857.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you

Lincolnshire / Re: Smith marriage

From Lincolnshire County Counsil, Lincolnshire Convicts Transported
Smith, John of Winterton
Occupation, Labourer Age 22
Crime, breaking into the granary of Robert Everatt farmer of Saxby and stealing 4 bacon hams and 2 hempen sacks
Place of crime, Saxby
Court, Lindsey Quarter Sesions, Trial date 17/07/1818
Sentence, 7 years,  Transportation date 1819,  Ship, Baring,  Destination NSW
Sources used, Trial documents
Other remarks, Pleaded guilty, his brother Thomas Smith 20 pleaded not guilty to the crime but received the same sentence. Their brother Joseph Smith of Barton on Humber aged 18 gave evidence against them, and the trial evidence also mentioned a sister Neale who lived at Barton. The brothers sold the hams in Hull.

Did think of Neale being a nickname but it would not fit any of the three sisters Diana, Mary or Hannah Maria, and the only one i know who married into the family was Fanny so don't know who it could be.

The connection is actually my wife's through Joseph the third one to be transported to NSW in 1825, at his trial he was Joseph of Barton St Peter
Another interesting thing was at John and Thomas's trial there was a sister mentioned, NEALE who lived at Barton but cannot find her
Children for Border and Fanny (married 15 May 1826 Winterton), Joseph Chr 26 Aug 1827 Dth 12 Feb 1829, Thomas 30 Aug 1829, Mary 1830, John 12 Jan 1834, William 27 Oct 1835, Robert 24 Dec 1837, Richard 24 May 1840, Joseph 4 Apr 1842, Esther 14 Apr 1844, James 15 Jun 1846, Charlotte19 Aug 1849.
Please correct if you think i have any of them wrong.
Also notice that the mothers name Elizabeth does not appear very often in the family's, there is a Betsey in Josephs Australian family and a Ethel Elizabeth in his son Thomas's family.
The first female name to come up most of the time is Mary, did no one like their mother

Thanks Shane
Looks like that will be as far as i go with the Hand family
Drumconrath must have started records earlier as Jane came up in 1919 with parents and sponsors so was lucky with that family

Thanks again

Trying to find Thomas Hand/Hann birth and parents
He married Jane Miller 28 Apr 1836, Lobinstown but no parents were listed on the marriage record
They had 5 children in Lobinstown before moving to Dublin 1847-1851
The Jane i have was born 20 June 1819, Drumconrath so would only be 16 when married but have no age for Thomas
