Well done!  I was just trawling through immigration records, having not found a birth for Sidney in NZ.

That means Sidney and our Walter James are brothers.  Walter was born to James and Mary Ann in Newmarket.

When James died, Mary Ann (nee Griffin, in one source) married William Charles Strong in 1885.

I have a birth for Sydney Herbert Bidlake, 1879, Epsom, Surrey England

I've picked up your line, although I can't see a link yet - it's maybe possible that there's a link further back - I would suspect that your Sidney Herbert and our Walter James are probably brothers.  Sidney born approx 1879, Walter b. 1880, and I think they were both in Wanganui.

Sidney Herbert Bidlake (carpenter, Wanganui)
m. Ettie O'Neale in 1911

Children:
- Arthur Clive 1912
- Leslie Herbert 1914
- Hazel Bernice 1915
- Roy Neale 1917
(Possibly others later on)

Also found a piece on Sidney in a 1918 newspaper:  https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/WC19180206.2.21?query=military%20service%20board

Hi Sonya  :-)   I don't have a lot specifically about the Bidlakes, although, of course, if you are descended from the same Bidlake in this tree, then you'll share the Wakefield ancestor too.

I have:

Clara Mary Wakefield, born 1885
married Walter James Bidlake in 1909

Their son Cyril Walter Leonard Bidlake, born 1910

They possibly had other children - I know I have more raw data on them someplace, but this is what's made it to my tree

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: Wakefield family of Nelson

KGray!  I'm not sure why Rootschat only notified me about Maria's recent post, but not yours from two years ago!

I did manage to untangle the Wakefield/Gray family connections.  It turned out that there are actually two cousins who had the same names at one stage.  Clara's child George William Wakefield became George William Gray when she married, and her older brother William had a son by the same name.  There's still a big online family tree circulating which has the original error in it, and I can't seem to get the owner to change the mistake.

So many cousins around!

Hi Maria!  Yes, we've found a lot about that in the years since that post was made - my daughter's line is from the 1852 baby  :-)

That would mean that you and my daughter are cousins on the Lechner side!  It would be interesting to do a DNA comparison.  The child went through a name change when his mother married.  I corresponded with Doug Lechner, who wrote a book about the family history, but he died about 4 years ago.  There's a LOT of information about JWT available online now that wasn't searchable when I began looking.  He was certainly a character!

JWT's grave is in Rotorua, and I think I've located Carl Lechner/William Wakefield's grave in Te Kuiti.

Hi Robin - hopefully your email address is still current since this thread several years ago!  I'm also in New Zealand, and apparently descended from these O'Hara ancestors, according to notes in an old family bible, although I'm hunting down one missing link.

I'd love to hear from you!

How wonderful!  I'd love to see a photo.

I've got a TON more information since this post was made a couple of years ago, both about his family, and Anne's - her surname turned out to be Canavan, not Cameron.
