The Common Room / Maiden and 1st married name in Index of marriages
« on: Saturday 04 July 09 14:14 BST (UK)  »
In the Civil Registration Index of marriages I have just found a couple of cases where a woman marrying for a second time is recorded twice, once with her maiden name and also as a separate entry with her married name from her first marriage. The single entry for the spouse of the second marriage has both maiden name and married name of the women record (recorded as "name 1" or "name 2".

Is this the norm or have I just been lucky? The maiden names were rare and easily found, the married names were widely used and so the second marriages would probably have remained undiscovered. the years were 1932 and 1953.

The Common Room / Coffin length and height of occupant
« on: Tuesday 05 May 09 15:45 BST (UK)  »
I have downloaded a number of ‘Burial slips’ from the midlands historical data site for burials at Warwick Cemetery. These give name and address of deceased, address of where death occurred, date of death, date and time of when the burial was to be, plot number, where the funeral was to be and also the size of the coffin (for the grave digger). Each slip cost me 15p, a bargain for all that information.

My question is about the coffin size. Does anyone know how much bigger than the occupant (as it were) that the coffin would be? I have various coffin sizes of between 5’6” and 6”, but great great Granddad George’s coffin was 6’4” which made him much taller than everyone else, but how tall?. Are we talking about the width of the box at each end of the coffin as the difference, do we stretch or shrink after death, would he have his shoes on. If as it seems he was over 6” he would have been pretty tall for someone born in 1841.

Another thing that I noticed was that each married couple was buried in the same plot. Was this a matter of course for a husband and wife, or would someone have to specify this?

Immigrants & Emigrants - General / Ship passenger lists Ancestry and findmypast
« on: Monday 02 June 08 16:04 BST (UK)  »
Hi

On Ancestry I have discovered a probable relative arriving in New York in 1956. The only information for both he and his wife are the number of bags that they had with them and that they were en route to Canada. (fits in with family rumour).

I have also found him in the passenger list index on Findmypast. The index shows a date of birth as 1927.

Would I be right in believing that the findmypast data (I don’t have access) is the passenger list on departure? If so what other information could I expect. Is the year of birth just derived from a given age?

The Lighter Side / Named after a world event
« on: Monday 11 June 07 09:29 BST (UK)  »
Adjacent to a birth I was looking up in the births for July Quarter of 1969, I saw someone had been given Neil Armstrong as their forenames.

Now I know popular or world events can influence people's judgement when naming children (taken to extremes names of complete football teams are popular) so why wasn’t I named James Dean or Albert Einstein (both died in my birth year).  :) :) Or maybe I was born in a year when nothing happened and ended up with two unrelated forenames which didn’t position me to a point in history. :(  Well thank goodness for that.
