Family History Beginners Board / how would I go about this search please?
« on: Monday 01 June 15 09:15 BST (UK)  »
My Gt Gt Grandmother Mary Ann McTurk (nee Diamond) died one week after childbirth due to "effusion of the brain. convulsions and paralysis - 1week" - as stated on her death certificate. Her husband was present at the death, on 4th March 1858 at their home 9 Jacksons Place, Bothchergate, Carlisle.
Then sadly, 5 months later, the baby girl died, 17th July 1858 due to convulsions. The death certificate names her as the daughter of James McTurk (Stonemason) - which is correct.  However, the birth is registered by Ann Diamond -certificate reads "Ann Diamond present at the death, 10 King Street, Carlisle".

Now some of Mary Ann's siblings didn't marry (or so it appears from 1881 census, 2 sisters still living with their 88 year old mum still using maiden names) but neither are Ann, nor does it look like she had a sister called Ann.

I've tried searching for a sister-in-law, so far none as turned up, although this is why I'm asking how I would go about a search for her not knowing which brother she married, nor her maiden name.
So far, through the brothers I have found a niece called Ann Diamond, but she would have been 11 years old when the baby died.

Any ideas please?

Family History Beginners Board / widow on census but husband living with children
« on: Saturday 30 May 15 21:26 BST (UK)  »
I've found my Gt Gt Grandmother on the 1911 census living with her daughter's (my Gt Gran) family. she is listed as relation to head: wives mother, widow, (though to be honest my great granddad did write married - then crossed it out to write widow)
However, I have found her 3rd husband living with his one of his children from his first marriage - it reads married (not widower)!!.
Could this be correct? I've checked occupation (painter) from the previous census, age is approximate.
If they had fallen out/split up etc, would it have been the norm to pretend status? I've checked death records too, one of the other people researching him have added his death as Jan 1910 but this is the wrong surname Reavey instead of Reeves. The only death in the 10 year period is Reeves in 1919 which corresponds to the census details
Am I right in assuming a marriage break up do you think?

Family History Beginners Board / 1911 census - signature
« on: Saturday 30 May 15 20:48 BST (UK)  »
Hi, another quick question

On the 1881 Census image (on Ancestry) would the signature at the bottom be that of the person filling in the census - in this case it gives my great granddad's names as the signature. Would it actually be his signature?

Family History Beginners Board / Quick Question Marriage or not?
« on: Friday 29 May 15 13:46 BST (UK)  »
stupid question, really... and I know the answer, just want to get my head in the right place  ;D

I've found an entry in the 1841 census for St Mary Newington where my Great Great Grandparents where married (I have the certificate). On it appears to be my GtGt Granddad age 3 Richard Jackson with his mum Elizabeth age 20 yrs but with her maiden name Hall, and they are living with her parents and siblings - of course the 1841 details are scarce.

Would she have named her illegitimate son with his fathers name? They obviously later lived together as man and wife, but I cannot find any marriage for them!

Thanks
Bev

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / age on marriage certificate
« on: Thursday 28 May 15 21:25 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying (and its a solid brick wall) my Great Great Grandfathers death. Given the amount of Richard Jacksons who died in the area, at the period of time, it seems that the only death of a Richard of the (what we thought) correct age would have died 2 years before his son (my Great Grandfather) was born. Richard is named on the birth certificate.
Looking at Richard and Isabella's wedding certificate to see if I had missed something (like his age) I noticed that it hasn't got either of their ages... Isabella's age seems to read "Full" but I cant read Richards age but it seems to me to read "minor"
Could anyone clarify it for me please? It would alter the search for his death by a few years!

Thank you in advance

Family History Beginners Board / Any ideas please with my Jackson Family
« on: Wednesday 27 May 15 22:57 BST (UK)  »
Richard Matthew Jackson born 1839 Southwark, London, married Isabella Parsons born 07 Jun 1835 in Tower Hamlets, Middlesex 25 Dec 1858 St Mary, Newington.

They had (that I can find, or that survived childhood) Richard Henry Jackson 1859 – 1912, Elizabeth Jackson 1866 – ?, William Jackson 1868 – 1915, Amos Jackson 1870 – 1945, Alfred Jackson 1875 – 1935 (my great grandfather) - the youngest two born in Manchester.

In 1881, the census lists the 2 older children living with their grandparents Richard and Elizabeth Jackson at 19 Bk Preston Street, Manchester Isabella and her son William aged 14 were pauper inmates at Crumpsall Workhouse, and Amos and Alfred were pauper inmates at Swinton Industrial school. All the family were in the tobacco pipe making business.  I am presuming Richard Matthew had died. although his death is a mystery I haven't been able to solve. Any ideas as to his death would be greatly appreciated.

The second mystery is Isabella's death. I have her in 1891 at 44 Sycamore Street, New Cross, Manchester, as head of household, age 52 yrs and living with her two youngest sons.

I decided to try a broad range burial search on Manchester's council website and found (unfortunately) a few possibilities, I narrowed it down by area and cross referencing with freebmd
to  Jun 1892  age 53   and corresponding burial 28/06/1892   Isabella Jackson   Manchester General Cemetery (close enough to where she lived, although i would have thought Phillips Park was nearer) - do you think my logic stands up?

I can't find Richard Matthew on any census after 1871, and a search of the cemeteries is not helping. He is named on Alfred's birth certificate, so he was still alive in July 1875.

a search for deaths brings up
Surname    First name(s)    Age    District    Vol    Page
Deaths Sep 1875     JACKSON    Richard    70    Manchester    8d   188
Deaths Jun 1877     JACKSON    Richard    58    Manchester    8d   138
Deaths Jun 1883     Jackson    Richard Arthur    0    Manchester    8d   118
Deaths Sep 1883     JACKSON    Richard    40    Manchester    8d   52
Deaths Dec 1885     Jackson    Richard    1    Manchester    8d   151
Deaths Sep 1888     JACKSON    Richard Henry    1    Manchester    8d   147
Deaths Mar 1891     Jackson    Richard Henry    0    Manchester    8d   187
Deaths Dec 1893     Jackson    Richard    74    Manchester    8d   157

ruling out infant deaths it seems like the only possibility is
Sep 1883     JACKSON    Richard    40    Manchester - but then why can't I find him on a census? and why did his family end up in the workhouse?

My 2 x Great Granddad is an elusive man, both myself and my cousin are researching him and have hit a solid brick wall. He is leading us a very merry dance to say the least.

Here is what we have so far, (I've also attached a note believed to have been written by him).

From his first marriage certificate:
John Drain married 28 March 1871 in Penrith, Cumberland age 21 years, bachelor, to Margaret McTurk age 19 yrs, spinster. He was a Granite polisher, she was a domestic servant, both were living at the quarry in Shap at the time of marriage. He gives his fathers name as Andrew Drain who allegedly was an Engineer. He married in St Catherines RC church
From his second marriage certificate:
John Drain(widower) 3rd March 1905 married Jane Dobie Buchanon (widow) He gives age 57 she gives age 49. He was a Quarry Foreman, living in Dalbeattie. Since this is a Scottish marriage, we also have (his) Parents Henry Drain general labourer (deceased) Jane Drain maiden surname McLelland (deceased) married in the United Free Church of Scotland

Ok so far TWO fathers names... both different. However, the latter is the more likely since many others are also researching and have come up with similar conclusions. But I am open to other options given that we do have other info. including the note I have attached.

His death certificate was registered by his daughter, the info as follows:
John Drain, Granite Quarrier, foreman 19 Dec 1924 died in Paisley infimary, Fathers name: JOHN Drain masons labourer deceased.

Working on the note he wrote, his mother is Jane McLellan who married Henry.
We found John on 1851 Census age four with Henry and Jane, his sister Janet (Jennet) who is also elusive,  and sister Margaret. this gives his birth year as 1847 in Kirkmaiden.

In 1861 we find John as a 13 year old living with his parents and siblings in Eastwood, Renfrewshire,  his place of birth given as Galloway (close enough to Kirkmaiden).

On the 1871 census he is living with his young wife and baby in Shap, Penrith as a 21 year old.
In 1881 and 1891 John is living in Dalbeattie with his own family as head of the household. 1881 birth place says Scotland, 1891 says Stoneykirk.

1901 sees him living with his daughter and her family, still in Dalbeattie, but this time his place of birth is given as Ireland - which is incidentally where Henry is from.

I can't find him on the 1911 census, but I have a letter written to him in 1915 when he was still living in Dalbeattie.

if Henry and Jane (Jean) are his parents, they were definitely Catholic. all the oher children apart from John and Janet (Jennet) were christened in the Catholic church, so why would good catholic parents NOT baptise their two oldest children. but we cannot find them both on any search.

Any ideas or help would be grateful, it's driving both myself an my cousin daft... we wake up in the early hours to search before work!

Thank you in advance for reading
