Hi everyone,
My Great Great Granddad John Drain received a letter from the (then) Mayor of Norwich when his son, my Great Granddad James died in the military hospital. It was sent in the form (I'm presuming since I only have a scan of it) of a booklet, which someone had numbered the pages of. I've attached the scan of both pieces.
Could anyone decipher this please? Whilst I have managed to read some of it, it would be nice to know the full contents

Thank you in advance
Bev

Family History Beginners Board / Whatever happened to Elizabeth Carson Drain
« on: Monday 11 May 15 17:53 BST (UK)  »
I've hit (along with my cousin whose Grandmother we are looking for) a solid brick wall.

This is what we know so far:
Elizabeth Carson Drain was born  1 Sept 1880 in 115 Copland St, Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire, she grew up in Dalbeattie, since we find her in 1881 and  1891 census with her parent(s).
In 1897 she had an illegitimate daughter Williamina Drain, and in 1899 she had another illegitimate daughter Elizabeth Drain.
in 1901 she was a chambermaid at the Station Hotel in Dumfries.
on the 9th Feb 1903 she married David Brown and had 3 children to him,
Margaret McTURK Brown
1903 – 1974
Christina Bell Brown
1905 – 1991
William John DRAIN Brown
1907 – 1985

David died in 1923 and on 17 Jun 1930 at the age of 49 living at 21 Hope St, Glasgow, Lanarkshire, she married James Mayneilly.

She liked to travel, visiting her siblings some of whom lived in Manchester and Nottingham, but one of her sisters had emitrated to San Franscisco, and another to South Africa. My mum (only a child at the time) remembers Aunt Eliza talking about thinking about a visit to Aggy, (Agnes) in South Africa, and we always believed that she had in fact made the journey.
Her sister Jemima in San Franscisco had died in 1936 so we know that the visit wasn't to her, although it could have been to see the nephews etc,
Agnes died in South Africa in 1945, and we believe that Elizabeth died about 1945 to 1947.
My cousin paid for a search in South Africa but came up with nothing for Elizabeth. The story goes that she died just before the ship docked. But, surely there would still be a record somewhere of her death.
We cannot trace her, and being that death records are necessary for burial it would seem obvious that the records must be in existence somewhere.

Any ideas or thoughts as to what direction we should search in would be greatly welcomed!
This is one of those mysteries that won't let you sleep  :D

Family History Beginners Board / 1881 Census on ancestry
« on: Sunday 10 May 15 18:46 BST (UK)  »
I'm wondering if it's just me. In fact I'm getting a bit paranoid now  >:(

I found my Great Great Grandfather William Taylor (and his wife and children) on a old fashioned fiche a long time ago now, in the Latter Day Saints library, and today I managed to find them again on family search. The citation link mentions FindMyPast but a search on there doesn't find him. Nor does a search on ancestry despite the fact I have the reference numbers -page, folio piece etc. I even have his occupation, which I already knew from my Grandmother. The printout I have has the shortened form of his name Wm. so I've searched on that too. NOTHING!...
Deciding to add a photo of the printout instead as a source on ancestry I decided to try to fill in a few details on my great great aunt, since I've received some correspondence from a cousin today.
Margaret Drain was born in 1871 in Shap, she appears as a baby on the 1871 census, and on the 1881 census with the rest of the family in Dalbeattie where they all grew up. Now I have a print out of her in 1891 census in Kirkcudbright, as a 20 year old domestic servant. I found it on FindMyPast, but can't find her at all on Ancestry!!
Is it me? Is it Ancestry? Anyone else had similar problems?

Kirkcudbrightshire / Southwick Graveyard, in Dalbeattie
« on: Monday 04 May 15 18:15 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone,

I've been told that my Great Great Grandmother Margaret (McTurk) Drain who died 15th October 1889 at home (116 Southwick Road, Dalbeattie) could have been buried in Southwick Graveyard. I know she isn't buried in the municiple cemetary in Dalbeattie, I've had the records checked, but can't find her anywhere. She lost 4 children (2 premature babies only hours old, a 3 yr old and a 10 yr old) before she passed.

Does anyone know where Southwick Graveyard is located please (I've visited Colvend Graveyard already too) or where I might find records for any of the other graveyards in the area?

Many thanks
Beverley

2nd Battalion Border Regiment, believed to be taken November 1914.
I know my Great Granddad James McTurk Drain is one of the men, I don't know the names of any of the other soldiers. It would be lovely to try to name them all.

The second photo is my Great Granddad - can this be enhanced please?
Can any of you talented people help please?

Could someone please help decipher the wedding certificate of my  3rd great grandparents.
I can read most of it, however, the name of the church is stumping me, and the street name of Sarah, I can read St ? street, Salford.
On a very positive note, the details of Joseph's father lead me to newspaper clippings suggesting he was made bankrupt... if that can be considered positive  :)

Any help is greatly appreciated
Bev
