Hi,
could one of you very talented people please help with this please?
I can read most of it but stumped on cause of death... heart disease obviously but stumped by what it says below that...
one of her babies died shortly before (or after) her death we believe, but the infant wasn't named. I'm assuming that if she and the babe had died in childbirth it would say so on the certificate

Any help much appreciated
and thank you

I hope I'm posting on the correct board.

I'm trying to find the burial place of my GrGr Grandmother and 4 of her babies. She died 15th October 1889 in 116 Southwick Road, Dalbeattie, I have her death certificate.
3 of her children preceded her and one died at or shortly after her death, although her death certificate does say heart disease not childbirth. I've done a complete tour of the legible gravestones in Dalbeattie cemetery, and although I did find other family, I could not find GtGt Grandma Margaret (McTurk) Drain.

I'm thinking that the local authorities might have it on record (Manchester do) and would like to be able to contact them, but can't find out who/where to contact.
Is Dalbeattie Cemetery privately owned or council?
Any ideas would be very welcome
Thanks in advance

The Lighter Side / To make you smile - A 21st century mum

I can't take credit for this, I came across it whilst browsing, but it made me smile... hope it makes your day,

A Modern Mother
A modern mother is explaining to her little girl about pictures in the family photo album. This is the geneticist with your surrogate mother and here's your sperm donor and your father’s clone. This is me holding you when you were just a frozen embryo. The lady with the very troubled look on her face is your aunt, a genealogist.

Northumberland / Why is The Diamond Oak in Lambley so named? Does anyone know?
« on: Friday 17 April 15 23:03 BST (UK)  »
Hi,
my 2 x great grandmother was born in the Quarry House, in Lambley, and whilst searching for maps and photos came across one entitled The Diamond oak in Lambley, showing a majestic oak tree.
Does anyone know why it is so named?
The reason being, my 3x great grandmother was named Diamond.

Thanks in advance

Handwriting Deciphering & Recognition / John Drain second marriage
« on: Thursday 16 April 15 16:27 BST (UK)  »
This might be a tad difficult, the writing is faded on the record. I wonder how it is that one from 1861 if clearer than one in 1905. Makes no sense :)

Any help will be appreciated greatly and might just lead me to John's grave.
Thank you all in advance

Okay, I'll admit to being stuck, totally banging my head hard on a brick wall. To make matters worse, I listened to "distant" cousins" or descendants of my ancestors siblings, assuming they had (in a couple of instances they were correct) better info that I did.
WRONG. I seem to be at a crossroads - is this him/is that him...
Here's what I have and do know.
John Drain was born in (about) 1850, in (he says on the 1851 census, when he lived at  116, Southwick Road, Urr, Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland) Lanarkshire. He was a quarryman.
The address and his wife and children are correct as is his trade so it is definitely him on the census.
He married at the age of 21 to Margaret McTurk (I have the wedding certificate) he gives his job as Granite Polisher, and at the time of his marriage he was living in Shap, (again correct, since some of his children and one being my great granddad were born there). He gives his father’s name as Andrew Drain, who was according to John on the marriage certificate an Engineer.
I haven't been able to find John's birth certificate, but do have his death certificate, he died on 20th December in paisley, Renfrewshire. Being a Scottish certificate it gives his father’s name has John Drain - profession of father is masons labourer, no mothers name since his daughter did not know her grandmothers name. Incidentally, at the time of his death he is given as 74 years old.
So this is his family, as I stand at the moment:
John DRAIN - Birth: abt 1852 in Scotland, Death: 19 Dec 1924 Paisley Infirmary
Marriage: 28 Mar 1871    Penrith, Cumberland, England to
Margaret MCTURK - Birth: 28 Apr 1852    Quarry House, Lambley and Asholme, Haltwhistle, Northumberland, Death: 15 Oct 1889   116 Southwick Rd, Dalbeattie
Her Parents are: Father: James MCTURK (1824-1899) Mother: Mary Ann DIAMOND (1824-1871)
Their Children
Margaret DRAIN   Birth: abt 1871       Shap, Westmorland, England

Death: 4 Jul 1920     77 Queen St, Dumfries
John DRAIN      Birth: abt 1874       Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland
Jemima DRAIN      Birth: abt 1876       Shap, Westmorland, England
James McTurk DRAIN   Birth: 17 Jan 1877    Shap, Westmorland, England
Death: 29 Mar 1915    Norwich, Norfolk, England
William DRAIN      Birth: abt 1878       Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland
Death: 1888           116 Southwick Rd, Dalbeattie
Elizabeth Carson DRAIN   Birth: 1 Sep 1880     115 Copland St, DALBEATTIE,
                Death: 1947           Presumed South Africa
Mary Ann DRAIN   Birth: Aug 1882    Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire
Death: 21 Nov 1885    Southwick Rd, Dalbeattie,
William DRAIN       Birth: 1 Jul 1884     Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire
Death: 1 Jul 1884     Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire
Agnes DRAIN      Birth: 1885           Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire
                Death: 1945           Presumed South Africa
Female DRAIN      Birth: 16 Sep 1889    Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire
Death: 16 Sep 1889    Dalbeattie, Kirkcudbrightshire
Now, here's where I am totally lost.
I've been told by the distant cousins that John's father and grandfather were HENRY Drain from County Down Ireland. Henry is not a family name, and does not figure in any of the descendants of John. However, John does have a brother named William who is aged 17 on the census.
I found the census from 1851 Low Cunocktrie, Kirkmaiden, Wigtownshire, Scotland which says that the parents were William and Sarah both from Ireland, but their son William is 3, John was 1 year old, I also found the same family in 1861, where they also now have a 2 yr old son Henry.
On the other hand, searching for Andrew gave me Alan Drain born in Lanarkshire in about 1821.
Any thoughts anyone please, even if it's give up for now  ::)

Hi,
attached is a scan of an old tin photograph which sadly is now lost, and this is all we have left.
We believe it to be my 2nd Great Grandmother Ann Cresswell (Owen, Reeves). If it is possible to date the photo, it will narrow down as to whether it is her or her daughter, my Great Grandmother Sarah Owen. I must say the likeness to my Grandmother Ada is uncanny.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The Common Room / Interchangeable names- when do we consider them?
« on: Thursday 09 April 15 21:04 BST (UK)  »
I have a bit of a brick wall that I have been trying to knock down for quite a while now.
My 2nd Great Grandmother Ann Bridgwood (never appears to have the spelling Bridgewood although she appears variously as Anne, Ann, Anna, Annie and Hannah) born about 1848 and her parents. I have her wedding certificate in my possession, 14 March 1869 to James Hull witnessed by Jervis Bridgwood and Hannah Bridgwood. I also have located her in 1881 and 1891 in the census. But prior to those I can find little on her. Her father is on the certificate as Jabez Bridgwood. They apparently came to Manchester from Stoke.
The nearest I can find is on the 1861 census,
Jarvis Bridgwood age   44
Ann Bridgwood   age 40
Jarvis Bridgwood   age 16
Anna Bridgwood age   12
William Bridgwood age 10
Hannah Bridgwood age 8
John Bridgwood   age 3

In this she would be the 12 year old. But then, could Jabez be Jarvis (sometimes spelled Jervis), it could, I suppose sound similar, and would explain why Jabez is only used once in a family who seem to re-use names constantly.

Any thoughts would be welcome please
