London & Middlesex Completed Lookup Requests / Chefs in London Hotels
« on: Tuesday 25 April 06 03:38 BST (UK)  »
Can anyone tell me if there is a way of finding out details of chef's that trained in the big London hotels (I think it was the Dorchester) during the 1950's and 1960's. All I know is that the nephew of my husband's grandfather trained as a chef during this time. His surname was Perkins but there seems to be some confusion over his first name. It's either John or Jack, or Robert or Raymond. Any help to point me in the right direction would be appreciated.

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / Re: 1841 Census

Thanks Dave, Susan didn't marry again, but Alice was born about six months before Thomas and Susan married so that's probably the reason they got married. Thanks for the information, much appreciated.

Cambridgeshire Lookup Requests / 1841 Census
« on: Saturday 01 April 06 00:11 BST (UK)  »
I wonder if someone would be kind enough to look up the 1841 census for a Thomas Todd aged 45yrs. He lived in Fen Ditton, Cambridge and the film ref is HO107/67/2 folio ref 6B. I'd really like to know the details of who was at the same address as Thomas.
I find him confusing as in 1851 he's down as a widower - not sure what he was in 1841, but in 1832 he married a Susan Mansfield (the marriage ref says he is a widower then). Susan and her daughter Alice are in the 1841 and 1851 census but no sign of Thomas living with them. Alice then married and moved to London but Susan carried on living in Cambridge for about another 15 yrs before moving to London. Did they have divorce in those days?
Thanks for the help.

New Zealand Completed Requests / Re: can anyone help please in Auckland
« on: Friday 20 January 06 00:24 GMT (UK)  »
Sorry beg to differ, the New Zealand Herald is not available throughout the country, each area has it's own daily paper, although the three largest cities cover the surrounding area. None of the South Island or lower North Island towns get the New Zealand Herald.
One place they could look is the Telecom White Pages. Unlike England you can put in the surname and initial and ask it to look throughout the country. the webpage is www.whitepages.co.nz. I tried looking for an A Rogers in Auckland and came up with this one that also has a J for the wife.
Rogers A B & J A, 5 Laings Rd Bucklands Beach Auckland 0-9-534 1222
It's also possible to look at each individual island or each individual telephone area.
Another avenue is the NZ Woman's Weekly letters page. They have a special page for finding lost relatives and friends.
Hope this helps somewhat. Let me know if I can help further.

World War One / Re: Soldiers died in WW1 CD - lookup please

Not sure if this will help but when I found my husband's grandfather on the Commonwealth War Graves site, it gave the address of his next of kin as part of the details of the death record. The site is http://www.cwgc.org/cwgcinternet/search.aspx
Hope this helps.

Thanks Loo for answering my query re catholics and surnames. I'm fast coming to the conclusion they weren't married. Maybe as you said they lied when registering their children.

Great minds think alike. I had already searched all variations of the names I could think of, but with no success, so I thought of ordering the birth certificate for the first child as I have the reference for that. I'm also having difficulty finding the index reference for the third child (my husband's grandmother) and I know exactly when and where she was born, plus I have her death and marriage certificates. It's very frustrating. If they never married would the children be registered under their father's name? Also if they were catholics would they be on the index?
Thanks for your help.
