Australia Lookups completed / Re: Harry Waters - Victoria

Genni

I've downloaded the certificate which is great, son Alan was the informant and it seems sad that he didn't know who his grandparents were.

Could I ask you to have a look for wife Elsie's death?
On Harry's certificate it says he was married - I assume that it would say widowed if Elsie had already died - so I guess she may have outlived him.  Would just like to fill in this gap.

Son Alan lived at Clayton, Victoria, but I think he probably died too recently to find anything out about him unfortunately.

Thanks for your help.

Australia Lookups completed / Harry Waters - Victoria
« on: Tuesday 28 March 06 11:36 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for my grandmother's brother, Harry Hutchison Waters who emigrated to Australia, probably after the Second World War, though can't be precise on this.  He and his wife Elsie were living in Knox Field, Victoria in 1964, they had a son called Alan who I suspect was born in the UK and three grandchildren.
Harry's parents were Alexander Hutchison Waters and Kate Hazard.  He was born in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire 1891.

I'm wondering if there is any way I could possibly trace them emigrating, and their deaths.

Any help/advice would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Scotland / Re: Scotlands People

Hi there

Thank you all for your comments.    I can only assume that the birth was either not registered or registered somewhere where the registers are incomplete.  Other children in the family have been easy to find so I assume the family was Church of Scotland, but having searched the whole of Scotland (not just the parish in question) with a wide date range and different spellings (even Christian name variations) I really cannot find the birth, and it's cost me a small fortune!
I may just have to accept that I won't ever find it!

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks both of your for your input.
Jakky, the link certainly leads to some useful information, which may help me with both Robert and one of his grandsons.

Thank you for looking Barbara.  That's the only death for a Mary Waters I could find in Hull too.  I think I'll just have to order both death certificates and see what comes up.

I'm beginning to wonder if they separated/divorced but said they were widowed to hide the fact.

Thanks again

Hi!

I wonder if anyone can help?

I can't find a father and son on the 1891 Census, though I'm pretty sure I've got them on the 1901 Census.  As they were both 'seamen'
or 'mariners' I was wondering if they could have been away at sea and not included in the Census.

In 1881 I've got Robert Waters, age 47, born Scotland, Newhaven with wife Mary, age 43, born Glasgow.  Also daughter Margaret (19) born, Scotland, Leith and son Robert (12) born Glasgow.  They are living at  11 Hyde Park Terrace, Holy Trinity Hull (RG11/4777 page 34).

In 1891 I can find a Mary Waters born in Scotland of the right age, but it says she was a widow.  Daughter Margaret was married by this time.  There is no sign of either Robert.

In 1901 I've found Robert Waters, age 62, born Newhaven Scotland, master mariner, a widower, living at Cummins Terrace, Porter Street, Holy Trinity, Hull. (RG13/4500 page 2).  The age is wrong but it certainly sounds like the right person.

Also in 1901 I've found Robert Waters age 32 on board the Tantallon Castle (RG13/4474 page 171), so I think this is the son.

Sorry to be so long winded, but can anyone shed any light on this for me?  I'm puzzled as to how come Mary is listed as a widow if her husband actually was still alive.  I've also not been able to find the death of a Mary Waters in Hull prior to 1901 (she does not appear on the Census) and the Robert Waters death I found is in 1914.

Would appreciate your comments.

Thanks
Fiona
