Devon / Manor Theatre/Regal Cinema, Exmouth
« on: Friday 17 June 11 20:23 BST (UK)  »
Evening all

a long shot here but has anyone got a photograph of the old Regal Cinema, St Andrews Road, Exmouth please?

The building started life as the Manor Theatre in 1921 but was used as a cinema and then a ballroom in the 1950s before becoming Samanthas.

It is the period when it was a cinema/ballroom I would like if poss.

Thanks

World War One / William George Davidson
« on: Thursday 19 August 10 16:46 BST (UK)  »

Looking for some help with any military records for William George Davidson please, as I have only the following scant information for him: -

His birth/death certs shows he was born on 15 January 1898 in Peterhead and died in Aberdeen in 1973.

It is believed he served with the 4th Btn Gordon Highlanders in WW1 where he was wounded, either in France or Belgium.  He was returned to Norwich where he recovered and married in 1918.  He received a war pension.

Thank you and all help gratefully received

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Still looking for Thomas Armitage, Manchester
« on: Tuesday 11 May 10 15:05 BST (UK)  »
Hello all

I know that Thomas Armitage married Alice Ravenscroft (transcribed as Rowenscroft) at Manchester Cathedral on 1 November 1795 and that she was christened there in 1772 but am still looking for b and d information for Thomas.

I note the pilot IGI now includes a record for a death on 22 June 1824 at St Mary's Manchester of Thomas Armitage born about 1769, which would fit "my" Thomas perfectly.

Could anyone please lookup Manchester records for a birth for Thomas Armitage in 1769 and perhaps let me have a transcription of the death/burial record please?

Thank you

Lancashire / Warrington local paper archive
« on: Thursday 28 January 10 13:00 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather, Joseph Armitage, died on 28 October 1913 at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, Warrington.  I've been told that it was from eating dodgy mussels but the death cert says, simply, typhoid fever haemorrhage.

Does anyone know how far back the local paper's archives go?  I wondered if his death was reported or whether he had an obituary.

Thanks for any help

Lancashire Lookup Requests / Baptism of Richard Armitage Warrington
« on: Sunday 15 November 09 22:20 GMT (UK)  »
Hi

Richard Armitage of Warrington appears on all census records from 1841 - 1871 (he died in 1880 in West Derby) and his birth is given as either 1823, 1824 or 1826.  He married Sarah Gallop in Warrington at St Elphins in 1845.

I am looking for his baptism record but am having no joy, as he's not in St Elphins, as far as I can see.  I have a similar problem in finding his brother (?) William in 1830/1.

Does anyone have access to the records for Holy Trinity, St Paul's or St Ann's in Warrington, as I would really appreciate some help.

Thank you

H

P.S

Legislation, like the Canterbury Constitution and Rose's 1812 Act was introduced over the years requiring BMD records to be kept in standardised Registers, but I know many people did not get baptised until later in life, which makes them hard to find.  This might be a really stupid question but given the state's usual nosiness, prior to 1837, was one legally required to register a birth at all?
