Northumberland / Why would a family change their name back to a maiden name?
« on: Tuesday 26 January 16 20:05 GMT (UK)  »
I'm confused by the family of my 3rd great grandmother, Margaret Jane Southern, born 1840 in Blyth.

I have her marrying William Moore in 1859.

In both the 1861 and 1871 census' she is living with her parents and children in Middleton Yard.  In 1881 she is still in Middleton Yard but with just her children.  I can not find any mention of her husband in census returns.

Studying the census images it seems that in 1871 their is a W after her name, which I presume means Widow, although I can not find a death for William Moore.

In the 1881 census she is still a Moore but this time it has her as married instead of a widow and living with some of her children also going by the surname Moore.

By the 1891 census she is living in Bowes Street with a John Gilchrist and she is described as his wife.  Interestingly some of children continue to live with her but by now they are known as Southern, her maiden name.

In the 1901 census she is still known as Margaret Jane Gilchrist and that is the last I can find as her.  Her children continue to go by Southern and not Moore and marry with these names.

So what could the reason be behind this change in name? Could William Moore have abandoned the family?  But then how could his children revert back to their mothers maiden name?

World War Two / The battles surrounding D Day.
« on: Sunday 24 January 16 10:14 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies, I haven't frequented the military boards in the past and I'm a total novice to understanding military history.

I'm hoping someone maybe able to direct me in finding out more information about my grandfather.

My grandfather was injured in World War 2 and it's only recently (since being moved by the DDay museum in Portsmouth) that I've come to understand how much his experience of the war changed the man he was.

He never, ever talked about his experiences, but he spent many years in rehabilitation after losing a limb.  According to my brother my grandad arrived on the French beaches the day after the D Day landings and all that he knows is that he was injured on the beach and was left for dead.  He was found alive a few hours later and recovered.

I have searched various military records and can't find any information relating to him, are WW2 records closed for a period of time like Census records?

My grandad  name was Robert William Daley, born 1908.

My thanks in advance.

Wondering if anyone can give me any pointers on the people above (my X 3 great grandparents). From census returns I know that they originate from Longhorsley and Netherwitton but trying to find record of their births or baptisms to gain parents names is proving a sticking point.  From later baptisms records, of some of their children I think they were Roman Catholic and I think this is why I'm finding it difficult to trace them.  I can find their marriage in Longhorsley but am I right in thinking that Roman Catholics still had to marry in Church of England churches?  How can I go about finding Roman Catholic registers to trace their births? Do they exist?

The Common Room / 1939 Register - Question about shift workers?
« on: Monday 09 November 15 23:52 GMT (UK)  »
Apologies if this has already been asked before but having searched all spellings and wildcards I just can't find my grandad on the 1939 Register.  I wondered if this was to do with his job and if he was at work when the register was taken, he was a miner.

I know he was definitely around as he worked up for the Homeguard as being a miner he wasn't allowed to be, called up to fight.

My grandmother can be found, with her mother and brother despite having been married for 5 years and the register being taken just 20 days prior to my dads birth.  Her name was Jane Isabella Thornton, born 1905, Northumberland.

Any suggestions on where I might find my grandad Joseph Hall Thornton, born 1904, Northumberland, hiding on the register?

Northumberland / Tracing family from Ireland to the North East.
« on: Wednesday 29 July 15 19:40 BST (UK)  »
I know my 4 x Great grandparents ended up in Blyth/Cowpen and from census returns I know they came from Ireland.  What I can't find is when they came to England from Ireland and from which part in Ireland they originated.  I've tried passenger and migration lists on Ancestry and Findmypast and can't find any record of them.  Has anyone successfully traced ancestors back to Ireland and how easy was it to find these records?

Gloucestershire / Inebriate Reformatory - Bristol 1915
« on: Tuesday 14 July 15 23:36 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know the name of what would be the Inebriate ReformAtory in Bristol in 1915?

I've just found a family member having been moved from northumberland to spend 3 years in the Bristol Reformatory in 1915.

Does anyone know if any further records on such an institution would exist?

Stirlingshire / Help to find a Cunningham ancestor.
« on: Friday 03 July 15 18:49 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to trace my great grandmothers family in Scotland and I'm at a total loss.

My great grandmother Janet Cunningham, born 1875 is listed as being born at 'woods of Dunmore' in the 1911 census.

She married my great grandfather Watson Oliver Thornton, born 1874 in 1899 in Morpeth, Northumberland.  I can't find them on the 1901 census to see where her birthplace is listed on there.

I know from her marriage certificate that her father was called William Cunningham and that he was a Blacksmith but that's all I know.

Can anyone suggest where I should be looking to find this Cunningham family?

Northumberland / Census' exhausted where to next?
« on: Monday 22 June 15 20:44 BST (UK)  »
So have managed to track back as far as the late 1700's using details for census returns and now I'm stuck.  I take it the next place for family information would be to turn to baptisms details but how easy is it access this information online?

Any recommendations for gleaning more Northumberland family information?
