Northumberland / Missing Straughans of Northumberland, can anyone help?
« on: Saturday 20 June 15 10:40 BST (UK)  »
I'm trying to extend my research on one side of the family and I'm drawing a complete blank.

I'm trying to find the Straughans who are living in Hartlaw in 1891, Ulgham in 1901 and Choppington in 1911.

I'm trying to find Thomas Straughan born 1869 in Belford and Ellen Straughan born 1841 in Belford.  I can't find them prior to 1891.  Despite cross referencing other family members and looking closer to Belford on the earlier census as it seems the family didn't move further afield until the later census'.

Can anyone suggest where I'm going wrong?

Berwickshire / Can anyone help with a marriage look up or pointer please?
« on: Thursday 04 June 15 20:18 BST (UK)  »
My husband 3 x great grandfather Henry William Clements was born in the Isle of Wight in 1823  but was resident in Berwick on the 1841 census.  His wife Rachel is listed on census's as being born in Berwick but I can't find any reference to their wedding or her maiden name.

Some of their children were also born in Berwick,
Christianna around 1847 and Charles in 1850 before they moved further down the Northumberland coast.

I presume that Berwick comes under Scotland as I can find all details of their children and their children's marriages with my Find my Past subscription, but I'm drawing a blank with the marriage and baptisms of their children.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Many thanks.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight / Coastguard - Isle of White 1820's
« on: Sunday 31 May 15 22:40 BST (UK)  »
Trying to research my husbands family.

His 3x great grandfather was a coastguard officer in northumberland in the mid to late 1800's, named Henry William Clements.

According to census details he was born in Ryde in  1824.  According to his baptism record he was baptised in Newchurch 1824 and his father was Charles Clements and mother Sarah.

I have found some Coastguard records that seem to point to his father Charles also being a coastguard but I can find no census records for Charles or Sarah.

Anyone any ideas how I can research this line of his family?

Many thanks.

Northumberland / What interesting things can be found at Woodhorn?
« on: Monday 25 May 15 18:28 BST (UK)  »
As it's half term and I'm only 20 minutes from there I thought I could combine a trip to Woodhorn with the family records section too.

Have managed to find out quite a bit about mine and husbands family on line (thanks to some unusual known names and tradition if following those names down the line), but am still drawing a line in a few places.  Namely my great grandads family, too common a name to confirm on census.  I thought that by checking the marriage certificate of my g grandad and grandmother their parents might be listed.

Also trying to find out some information on my husbands family, his Great great grandad came from Isle of White but worked for the coastguard on the northumberland coast. Will this information be stored at Woodhorn?

Anyone any other suggestions for what I should look at when there and what sort of price it will cost?

Many thanks.

Northumberland / Bedlington - Woods Pop Factory
« on: Saturday 09 May 15 11:02 BST (UK)  »
Hi everyone.  New to the site so apologies in advance for any inadvertent faux paus.  I'm trying to find a little bit more about the Woods pop factory business that was situated at Furnace Bank in Bedlington in the late 1800's.  I'm related to the family via my great grandmother who was daughter of Joseph Wood who set up the business.  I think that Joseph Wood came to the area from the Manchester area (from census details), no idea why, and eventually set up the business.  A lot of that family history has been lost now and wondered if anyone on here knows anything more about the family and the business.

Thanks in advance.
