Northumberland / Disappearing George Martin
« on: Saturday 08 April 17 14:47 BST (UK)  »
I'm struggling to get anywhere on finding any information on my 2 X great grandfather, George Martin, born 1859.

Kindly rootschatters found the marriage between him and my 2 X great grandmother, Mary Dixon in 1880 at St Albans, Earsdon and that his father was given as James.

I thought that this would help me in hunting George down but sadly not.  I have him living with Mary in 1881 in Blyth, occupation Boilersmith but then he disappears.

Mary remarries in 1890's but is living with her parents and children in 1891 in Blyth and is listed as Mary Martin and as married.

I can find another George in the 1901 census, living in Wallsend with an Alice Martin, his occupation is given as Boilersmith also but different year of birth, 1861.  Looking at the children living with George and Alice I can't seem to find their births registered under Martin.

I'm wondering if this is the same George Martin and both he and Mary were living bigamously with other partners.

Anyone got any tips on trying to solve the mystery?

Northumberland / Earsdon Marriage Details post 1844
« on: Friday 31 March 17 21:03 BST (UK)  »
Just realised the Durham Bishops Transcripts finish after 1844.  Trying to find the marriage details of my 2 X great grandparents who were married in 1880.

They were living in Blyth so I'm making an assumption that they were married in Earsdon.  Is there a way of finding out more information before paying for a marriage certificate?

Flintshire / Marriages in England but births in Wales
« on: Friday 24 February 17 23:05 GMT (UK)  »
Hi there

Not used the Wales board before.  I've recently discovered ancestors from Flintshire area and so my research takes me to looking at records in the Hawarden, Pentrobin, Buckley area.

I'm researching relatives of my 3 X Great Grandfather John Shone born 1821.  In researching his siblings I seem To have uncovered a few possibilities in terms of marriages, however these marriages appear to have taken place over the border in Chester.

I'm not sure if these are the correct records as subsequent children appear to have been born in Wales.  Is it likely that couples would have headed over the border and what was the benefits in doing this?

Northumberland / Happy Christmas All - help if possible!
« on: Sunday 25 December 16 13:02 GMT (UK)  »
 Happy Christmas to you all.

I've probably left this far too late in the day but I was hopeful of working this out myself and I can't so wondered if any board members can give me any pointers.

Me and my kids are working on a family scrapbook to give to my dad tomorrow with family info, members, stories and newspaper articles in and I've hit a brick wall with his great great grandmother.

I'm looking to find the parents of Eleanor Ray born 1841 in Belford.

The 1851 census has her living in Bamburgh with her grandfather Thomas Ray and aunt Ann and uncle Thomas.

Not being able to locate a birth for Eleanor on Ancestry, Findmypast, Freereg, Familysearch or the GRO index I came to an assumption that Ann, listed as aunt on the 51 census was her mother and that perhaps she was illegitimate.  Another Ancestry member has made the same assumption but now I'm not too sure.

In 1871 Eleanor is living with husband Robert Straughan (misspelt Strafen on this census) but also her aunt Ann Ray and Uncle Thomas Ray (brother and sister) are living with the family.  The fact that in 1871 Ann and Thomas are listed as aunt and uncle makes me doubt Ann to be her mother and I'm wondering if anyone can suggest another line of enquiry to help me solve this mystery.

Northumberland / Sadness of mining families.
« on: Thursday 24 November 16 23:16 GMT (UK)  »
My earlier post about a Thornton ancestor has led me to uncover a lot of sadness for this family with working in the mines.

My great grandmother Mary, lost her father, 2 sons and a grandson in mining accidents.  Her sons and grandson were all killed in the same mine (all different accidents).

My own grandfather was injured in a mining accident and rehabilitated at Hartford Hall.  He vowed that my father wouldn't follow him down the mine (which he didn't), it's no wonder he wouldn't let my father enter the mines after his own injuries and the deaths in his family through mining.

I can only imagine it's only the armed services that have the same amount of fatalities for families.

Northumberland / British in Germany mid 1800's
« on: Sunday 13 November 16 17:39 GMT (UK)  »
I was surprised to find one of my ancestors was listed on a census as having been born in Germany.

Ancestry has now linked this persons parents to a British Consulate marriage record in Prussia in 1857.

I'm confused as to why the parents, both of whom are British would have been in Germany at this time.

Does anyone know if any historical significance for this time period?

Northumberland / Workhouses

Does anyone know if the workhouses in the region were connected to each other?  Is it likely that an inmate would be moved from one workhouse to another?

Northumberland / Wallington Hall History
« on: Friday 01 April 16 15:21 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how I can find out more about the staff that worked at Wallington Hall?

I've discovered that my 4th Great Aunt was married to Issac Milburn who was gamekeeper for Sir John Trevelyan.

It would be fascinating to see if any history exists especially as I loved playing here and particularly loved the dolls house when I was a child.  More recently my children have loved roaming around here.

Northumberland / Census help!
« on: Monday 21 March 16 17:42 GMT (UK)  »
Bit of a cheeky request if possible.

Trying to find out my 3 X Great Grandmothers maiden name.  I thought that I would be able to find this via the Durham Bishops transcripts but after trawling through them I'm still at a loss.

I've tried looking at the marriages in the area she was born and also where my 2 X Great Grandmother was born but still no sign of the marriage.  Thought my 3 X Great Grandfathers birth place might provide some luck but this is where I run into difficultly, I'm really struggling to make out his place of birth on census returns.  On all the census where place if birth is given there is a different name given each time, warenford shows up in one but I really can't read the rest.

I wondered if anyone who has census access could take a look for me and see what they can make out for his place if birth.

His name is William Knox born 1799, living in Seaton Deleval, Earsdon in 1841,1851,1861 and 1871.

Grateful for any tips or suggestions.
