Records before 1911 are kept at the New Jersey State Archives.  Records from 1848 to present are also kept by the Local Registrars for individual counties, however many pre-1911 records have not survived.

Is he the Joseph S. Ford who died in Contra Costa, CA and is buried in the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery?  The cemetery has a website - you might contact them for possible family info.

Another possibility might be city directories for Contra Costa after 1997 if they exist.

Do you have any idea of the city/state where George was born?

Are you positive that Mariam Sydney was the daughter of G.H. Wood and Marian Ainsworth?  There is an article dated 1898 about the two of them from an Australian newspaper.  Her name is spelled Marian, not Mariam.  They are performing at the Tivoli theater in Australia and it states that she is happy to be back in her home country.  Tells about their marriage, but mentions no child.

If your Mariam is her daughter, perhaps they went back to Australia?

I am confused.  You say she was a nurse in 1920, yet in 1926 she was a student nurse?  And she was a 2nd Lt. at age 20?

I know you have probably searched the Internet for this man, but I see he was a very interesting person.  Parents were Nathaniel Douglas and Margaret Heron.  Born in Kirkmabreck (though this has been disputed).  Founder of the Douglas Free School.  Apparently lived in Georgia before going to Jamaica.

Can you find a birthdate for any of siblings so you could at least have an idea of his bd?

I tried newspaperarchive.com and didn't find anything.  You might try it anyway.

Samuel Douglas is a fairly common name.  Do you have a middle name or initial?  Wife's name?  Where did you find this exact death date?
