Do you have any direct evidence that John & Eliza are both parents of the children born before the 1884 marriage? Were they both previously unmarried in 1884?  I looked for a couple of the pre 1884 children in your list and have a hard time matching the dates/locations with the BMD indexes.  Even Robert who appears to be 3 weeks (or possibly months) old on the 1881 census is proving elusive.

I discounted that yard at the rear of the bank as the wires in the second picture suggest to me that the large building may be opposite a trolley bus junction.  I don't know the area well enough to suggest an alternative street.

According to 1950's telephone directories, the Barclays on Romford Rd was always at number 306 on the corner of Upton Lane.  In my opinion, the road doesn't appear wide enough to be the Romford Rd.

I think that may be a photographers studio and the subjects are standing in front of a painted backdrop.  There appears to be a window on the right for natural lighting.  It looks no more than 10-12 ft wide. Not much room for a putting on any kind of show and it was a bit of a squeeze getting them all in the picture.

Canada / Re: looking for any info on grandfather Russell Denson born 1913

A very likely candidate for the Father of "Russell Lepage birth reg'd Sept.1912, Brighton, Sussex - mother maiden name Cason" appears in the 1911 Census living at 55 Stanford Road, Brighton.  Recorded as Charles Alfred Page/Divorced/Age 37/b. Brighton, Sussex/Professor of Violin, living with his Widowed mother [RG14PN5156 RG78PN228 RD80 SD1 ED4 SN32]

The evidence is provided by the marriage of Charles Alfred LePage (Age 26/Bachelor/Professor of Music) to Adela Margaret Goyder in Kensington 27 Dec 1899.  At the time Charles Alfred LePage stated his residence at the time of marriage as 55 Stanford Road, Brighton with his father being Charles R LePage.

I would suggest that following a separation/divorce from his 1899 wife, he returned to the family home in Brighton where he met Eunice Christine Cason (a 1911 census resident of Brighton).  The outcome of which was the birth of Russel LePage in 1912.

The Page family were also recorded in the 1901 census at the same address (Without Charles Alfred).

Edit: Adela Margaret LePage (petitioner) was divorced from Charles Alfred LePage (Respondent) 26 Apr 1909.  The grounds stated as "Adultery coupled with cruelty towards the petitioner".

In 1919 a Joseph James Smith appears on the absent voters list for Duddeston.  Absent from No 5 Court 34 Heneage Street, he is listed as 121391, Drv., 203. A.E Coy., Lab. Corps.

As he is at the same address in 1922 with an Eliza Smith (also a Thomas Cattell), it's quite possible he is your man.  Did John Henry Smith die prior to 1922.

The WW1 medal card for 121391 shows him as;
Smith Joseph J
R.G.A, Drv 757
Lab. C 121391
