Worcestershire / The Disappearance of Edwin Dunn
« on: Sunday 09 December 18 02:46 GMT (UK)  »
I need some help finding the whereabouts of my 2nd great-grandfather between around 1891 and 1921.
This is what I know of him:
- born 6 Jan 1850 Quarry Bank, Kingswinford Staffordshire (source: birth certificate)
- 1851 and 1861 lived with parents and siblings. In 1861 was an iron labourer.
- 1871 was a stock taker
- 24 Jun 1872 married Betsy Brooks at St. Kenelms, Romsley (source: marriage certificate)
- 1881 lived on Belmont Road with wife and mother in law. Occupation was bucket maker.
- trade directories show him as a bucket maker or galvanizer in 1888, 1889, 1890, and 1891.
- Crabbe Street Infant School admission records in 1891 or 1892 mentions him as the father to George Harry Brooks Dunn
- he is mentioned in his mother-in-law's Will written in 1891 but only as the husband to her daughter

He disappears after that. He isn't in the 1891 census, in 1901 and 1911 his wife Betsy calls herself a widow (I believe they separated or divorced) and there is nothing from him again until his son's marriage in 1915. The marriage certificate has him as a Sheet Iron Worker (master). I have a death certificate for an Edwin Dunn. At first I thought it was the wrong man but then I decided to trace all of the Edwin Dunns born around 1850 and my Edwin is the only one whose birth fits by a long shot.

Death Certificate states died 13 Aug 1921 at District Hospital. Address was 6 Bell Fold, Rood End, Oldbury. Occupation: General Labourer. Informant was S.A. Dickins of 12 Bell Fold, Rood End, Oldbury. Died of inoperable cancer of rectum and intestinal obstruction.

I have no idea where he was or what he was doing from about 1891 until his (possible) death in 1921. Any help finding him would be great.

Worcestershire / Brooks/Pardoes of Lye & Wollescote
« on: Sunday 01 October 17 17:46 BST (UK)  »
I have a bit of a family mystery I was hoping might be solved here.

My apparent 3rd great-grandmother was Elizabeth Pardoe, born about 1812 in Lye. Her parents were George Pardoe and Jemima Wooldridge. Elizabeth married Samuel Brooks 16 Dec 1839 at St. Leonard, Clent. They had 2 children, John, who was born in 1845 and died in 1846, and Betsy, born 1849 and died 1928. Betsy is my 2nd great-grandmother (on paper). She married Edwin Dunn 24 Jun 1872 at Saint Kenelms, Romsley.

My mystery is with their son, George Harry Dunn. My granddad (George's son) had been told that his dad had been "taken in" by someone but within the family. I'm wondering if anyone who is related to the Pardoe/Brooks line might know anything about a baby boy given up for adoption and taken in by Betsy Brooks. The year was either 1883 or 1884. His school admission (Crabbe Street Infant School) and the 1939 Register say he was born in 1883 but his Service Records show 1884.

Thanks in advance for any clues or tips anyone might have.

Staffordshire / William Dunn of Kingswinford 1776
« on: Tuesday 25 July 17 16:24 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone can help me with this. I have William Dunn born sometime between 1776 and 1781 in Kingswinford, Staffordshire. He married Sarah Whitaker in 1803. They had several children, all of them baptised at Park Lane Presbyterian in Cradley. His parents are supposed to be James Dunn and Sarah Forrest (married 1777).

1) I cannot find a baptism record for William Dunn but I've been able to find them for his siblings. How can I find his baptism?

2) I've come across another Tree that has a James Dunn baptised at PLP, Cradley on 7 Apr 1805, as James William Dunn son of Joseph William and Sarah Dunn. This Tree has James Dunn as the son of William and Sarah Dunn. I have no idea how to figure out if this is correct or not.

3) There is a baptism record for Samuel Dunn 18 Nov 1807 who is a child of my William and Sarah Dunn and the record says, "son of William Junr. and Sarah Dunn". The "Junr." part has been added in after. Does that mean my William is not actually the son of James Dunn?

James Dunn was supposed to be my 5th great grandfather and one of the original Dunn's of Dunn's Bank in Quarry Bank. His brother was Daniel Dunn, a scythesmith, who also settled on Dunn's Bank. The land was then divided between their sons. James's two sons William and Silas each got some. Now I'm confused since I haven't been able to find any sources to prove that William is the son of James. The only times I've seen that is on other Trees.

Any tips on how to figure this out and some leads in the right direction of Parish Registers and such?

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Shared Ancestor Hints on Ancestry
« on: Sunday 25 June 17 14:44 BST (UK)  »
I've been watching some videos on how to do Mirror Trees or how to get the most out of your DNA Test Results and a lot of these videos talk about taking advantage of the Shared Ancestor Hints and making a "mirror tree" from those Shared Ancestor Hints. I have 258 pages of "Matches" and only 1 Shared Ancestor Hint.....just 1. That person has their tree set to Private so I can't see the hint; I've been in contact with this person so that's one lucky thing.

Has this happened to anyone else? Does anyone know if there's a trick to getting more Shared Ancestor Hints? I've seen in the videos the "vlogger" has said that if you aren't getting any Shared Ancestor Hints after 3 days then you need to switch the person the Tree is connected to. That made no sense to me since my DNA result is attached to the person who provided the sample.

Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Worcestershire / Galvanizing Manufacturers in the Lye Area
« on: Thursday 04 May 17 18:27 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know if it's possible to find out where exactly a person worked? My 2nd great grandfather was a galvanizer bucket maker and my great grandfather was a bucket maker before becoming a stoker with the Royal Navy. I was hoping to be able to figure out which manufacturer they may have worked for. Is this even possible? I know there's the Kelly's Directory but it hasn't helped me in this.

Thanks.

The Common Room / Help with Ancestry Photos
« on: Tuesday 18 April 17 19:50 BST (UK)  »
Does anyone know how Photo Sharing (or stealing) works on Ancestry? I had uploaded photos of my grandparents on my tree so that some distant relatives could see them. But then I got a bit creeped out when I saw my grandparents pictures pop up on a tree that someone created that appears to have zero relation to me. Their information is added but there is no connection to anyone else on her tree.

So my question is this: if I delete those pictures from Ancestry will they also be removed from anyone else's tree who has added them? I'm hoping if I delete them then they will disappear from the strange tree.

I suppose this is what I get for using a public site where everything is accessible to anyone and everyone.

Staffordshire Lookup Requests / Marriage Lookup in Kingswinford
« on: Monday 17 April 17 19:50 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping someone can help me track down a marriage between William Dunn and Mary Linton or Lynton. The year would be sometime in the 1720s or 1730s; I believe their first child was born in 1731 so I'd imagine their marriage would be sometime around then, unless they had other children that I have not found yet. The marriage could have taken place somewhere in Kingswinford. Their children were baptised at Brierley Hill and lived around Quarry Bank.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yorkshire (West Riding) / Bertie Clulee Dunn or Simpson
« on: Tuesday 11 April 17 14:56 BST (UK)  »
I'm looking for anyone who may be a descendant or know anything about a Bertie Clulee Dunn. He was born 1888 in registration district of Bradford but probably Shipley. I believe he married a Fanny Murgatroyd in 1913. His mother was Ann Dunn. He was born before his mother was married so I'm not sure who his biological father was but he lists his mother's husband, Wittam Simpson, as his father on his marriage certificate. I'm mostly just curious about him because his mother was my 2nd great aunt and I'm trying to find a connection with my own great grandfather whose birth is a mystery to us.

Thanks so much.

The Common Room / Descendants of Elijah Dunn of Quarry Bank, Staff.
« on: Tuesday 11 April 17 14:52 BST (UK)  »
Hello!

I was hoping to find some descendants of my 3rd great grandfather, Elijah Dunn. He was born about 1818 in Quarry Bank, Staffordshire. His parents were William Dunn and Sarah Whitaker. Elijah was married to Ann Westwood. The reason I didn't put this post in the Staffordshire section is because a lot of his children moved around the country, mostly Worcestershire and Yorkshire. This is what I know of his children:

-Elizabeth b. 1846 d. 1903 - married to Howard Wootton (later the surname was Wootton Walker)

-Elias Timothy b. 1848 d. 1907 - married to Elizabeth Green

-Edwin (my 2nd great grandfather) b. 1850 d. about 1921 but that information is from a Death Certificate and I'm not 100% sure it's for the same Edwin Dunn - married to Betsy Brooks

- Ambrose b. 1852 d. 1856

- Ann b. 1853 d. 1941 - married to Wittam Simpson and William Haw

- George Elijah b. 1855 d. 1915 - married to Mary Roberts

- Matilda b. 1857 d. unknown

- Roland b. 1860 d. 1942 - married to Emily Bradford

- Eli b. and d. 1861

- David (son of Elijah Dunn and Dinah or Diana Webb nee Skidmore) b. 1870 d. unknown - married to Eliza Pearson

I'd love to get in contact with anyone who may share these ancestors with me or know anything about them.

Thanks,

Melody
