Essex / James WEBB ca 1785
« on: Sunday 17 February 19 11:30 GMT (UK)  »
James WEBB was a warehouseman and later a tea dealer of Brick Lane, Spitalfields. Born Essex 1785 according to the 1851 census but where?  Age 55 in 1841 census. He died in 1851.

Married his second wife Mary France in Spitalfields in 1817 in the presence of William Webb. Mary came from Ashdon (1851 census) or Linton (1861). She died in 1867

George Henry Brown (1842-1934), son of John, and Sarah baptised 30 Apr 1843 in Southampton. Married to Elizabeth by 1866 when the first of their 13 children was born. They moved to Battersea in the 1870s.

Elizabeth was born in Southampton ca 1848 and died in 1905 or 1910. All the childrens' birth records on the GRO site show their mother's name as Primmer or Primer.

But no relevant marriage is evident in the GRO indexes.  The closest match is for a George Henry Brown married Elizabeth Church at Winchester in 1868

This Adam was buried at Woodchurch near Stone. Was he related to Adam Dennis, Yeoman of Stone, who died in 1803?

Bedfordshire / John Smith of Westoning
« on: Tuesday 08 May 18 08:19 BST (UK)  »
The recent threads by Terri Jackson on our mutual ancestor James Smith prompted me to revisit his possible ancestry.

James Smith & Ann Charlton's first few children were among the early baptisms at Westoning Baptist Chapel of which Bedford Archives states
"In June 1814 [WE1737-1738] John Smith of Westoning, yeoman, conveyed a barn "lately converted into a chapel by a society of the people called Methodists residing in or near the parish of Westoning" to Thomas Millard of Flitton, yeoman, for £80."

James Smith's parents may well have been John & Elizabeth Smith with Bedford Non-conformist records showing James born 29 April 1785.

Does anyone know more of John Smith of Westoning?

Can anyone suggest where John WAGHORNE might have been born?
He married Mary BIST on 5 Jan 1784 at Ightham or Shipbourne and they had 7 children baptised at Shipbourne between 1794 and 1808

Buckinghamshire / Lost pubs in Burnham
« on: Saturday 31 March 18 15:03 BST (UK)  »
I recently stumbled across a listing of all the pubs in Bucks in 1872. This includes 29 pubs in Burnham (encompassing Cippenham)!
The Pubshistory site provides some clues (as indicated below) as to where some of these were located but can anyone offer more information?

While I can identify many of these from local knowledge and a previous thread on here about the Alma and the Grenville Arms I am at a loss to identify the following

Boot   High Street
Brickmakers'  Arms   Church Street? (two are listed but pubhistory has a Bricklayers Arms in Church Street)
Dropmore Inn
Jolly Gardener
New Inn   Dropmore
One Mile House   Bath Road,
Rose And Crown   High Street
Three Horse Shoes
The Feathers   High Street

In addition two of the pubs are unamed with licensees JH Jarret and Alfred Heald

Dorset Lookup Requests / Henry WHITE & Elizabeth BROWN Preston 1790s
« on: Thursday 15 March 18 14:44 GMT (UK)  »
This couple married by banns at Preston on 13 Jan 1788 and had 4 children baptised there before Elizabeth died in Jan 1800. Henry appears to have been buried in Weymouth in 25 March 1832 age 70.

Their surviving sons Robert (1789-1873) and Thomas (1793-1873) were both sailors and both lived in Wyke Regis & Weymouth although Robert moved to Mylor then East Stonehouse ca.1840.

Does anyone know more of Henry or Elizabeth? I've seen the threads on Thomas and his family at Cone Street, Weymouth

Somerset / BISS- Stoke Lane near Frome
« on: Sunday 30 July 17 15:50 BST (UK)  »
Having identified Hiram BISS (1757-1796) as the father of Elizabeth it was easy to identify his baptism, in Stoke Lane as the son of Edward. However, Edward appears elusive with no other children baptised in Stoke Lane and no readily identifiable marriage or burial.

Hiram was otp when he married Martha Fry in Frome in 1781.

Any suggestions for this family?
