Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: DNA match query
« on: Thursday 19 October 23 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Yes age(s) are a key factor
When I first got my results I had a 339 cM match with no apparent connection, plus a 167 cM match (his niece).
The closer match is my age which eliminated a number of the options suggested by DNA painter.

Shared matches led me to the conclusion that my 339 cM match was my half-first cousin. His father was illegitimate and born in the same general area where my grandfather was living and working,

I've been perplexed by this at times, Ancestry's latest iteration has me down to 3% Scots ancestry, all from my paternal line.
The chromosome painter has this all in chromosome 6

Paternal GF's family is all Beds or Bucks back to the early 17C, as far as my cousin and I have managed to get
Paternal GM's line is from Sussex, Cambs/Hunts & Beds, much of it also back to the 17C

Small changes. Still 74% English but Swedish/Danish 9% German 8% with Scots down from 8% to 3%. Irish 4% and Welsh 2% unchanged

My wife's has switched 3% from Swedish/Danish to English; now 89% English, 9% Swedish/Danish and 2% Scots

All our traceable Ancestry is from Southern England

Some people can be very elusive inrecords.

I have multiple connections through a lady who appears to have been fathered by one of my grandmother's brother, and then had 9 or 10 children by two husbands. She appears in the 1939 index as born in 1920, and married in 1939, but appears to lack a birth registration. Her death register index suggests she was born in 1922. Neither she nor her mother or older (illegitimate) sister can be found in the 1921 census index and there is no evidence that the lady's mother married the alleged husband.

It's just thrown me a connection where a married GGM is given a daughter with a different surname born in a village that my GGM had no connection with!

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Suggestions for a 2nd cousin conundrum
« on: Sunday 20 August 23 11:39 BST (UK)  »
Phil, thanks for the suggestions but I've tried most of that. The female's parents aren't married (at least in any database search) and although the electoral roll points to the full mother's name, the only two individuals of that specific name both married in Yorkshire in the 1990s with one apparently still married to the same man.

My wife's great uncles of relevance to these two matches were born in 1917 and 1919 so might perhaps have fathered a child while serving in WWII but identifying any such child with scant information, and a relatively common surname (W), is almost impossible

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Suggestions for a 2nd cousin conundrum
« on: Sunday 20 August 23 09:53 BST (UK)  »
My wife has 3 apparent second cousin matches (on Ancestry)  from her 3 maternal great uncles who all lived in the London area

Cousin 1 b 1966London 207 cM - matches paper record
Male 2 b 2000 Cumbria 258 cM, father's name not recorded
Female 3 b 2002 Bedford 296 cM- mother's name a Yorkshire name (but not identifiable to a specific person)

Messages with Female 3 have indicated that Male 2's father's surname W is the same as her mother's surname and that they are close matches while she shares < 1% DNA (i.e. < 100 cM) with cousin 1

My wife has 7 other living 2C from this family line (born 1959 to 1989)

Thoughts?

MyHeritage shows an additional match at 239 cM, born in Lincs, with no apparent connection to any of the above

Ancestral Family Tree DNA Testing / Re: Ancestry Assignment to Both Sides
« on: Saturday 19 August 23 07:33 BST (UK)  »
Descent on both sides is certainly something that occurs but many such matches would probably be too long ago for Ancestry to recognise them. My wife and I are descended from the same couple born 1751 and 1760, my 4 x GGPs her 6 x GGPs, but we don't show as a match to each other (ca 4 cM using GEDMatch).

Perhaps more such cases are when the descent is from a small population (village) where there were a number of events over the years
