Hi Br1gau,

Thank you for that,  It is listed in 1881 census as Shaftesbury Training ship in East Ham,  what is strange I cannot find his Parents in the 1881 Census so whether something happened I have yet to find out.  his Parents were John Frank Bailey b1846 in odiham, Hampshire,  Susan Elizabeth Plumstead b1847 in Shoreditch, London. They lived in the Lambeth area.

The above is my Great Grandad and I found him in the 1881 census as being listed on a Shaftesbury Training Ship in East Ham.   Apparently all records were destroyed.  can anyone enlighten me about Shaftesbury Training ships and why he may of been on one?.

Thank you for your welcome and quick response.  unfortunately we do not know where William was born,  yes we have a copy of the marriage certificate,  they married in St Bartholomews Church in East Ham, London, where William was noted as a Bombadier in the RHA, in the Army, but we do not have any army records my hubby's  very elderly Aunt in Belgium says he was in the Royal Kings Rifles she cannot provide any mor em than that, that was in 1916 ,  Williams father George was on the Marriage Cert as a Labourer.

William married my Gran who was Doris Mabel wilding (on the cert as just Doris). She remarried later to a Southgate.

Many thanks

kind regards. Sue Smith

Trying to find any information on hubby's Grandfather William,  all we know is his Dad was called George Smith,  he married hubby's grandmother in 1916 in East Ham London,  both were down as living at the same address and he was down then as a Bombadier in Thr R H A.

willam left the marritable home in about 1932 when hubby's dad was about 3.  No one seems to know what happened to him,  any advise how to go about finds ou would be appreciated.
