Cumberland / Late 1700s Maryport Thompson/Cragg(on)family
« on: Sunday 26 September 21 21:00 BST (UK)  »
For many years I have been looking for the family of Hannah Thompson born around 1790 .She is my great great great grandma. Unfortunately a very common name but I would be grateful if anybody has any suggestions about this Hannah born in Maryport.
Hannah Thompson baptised Maryport 16 August 1789 daughter of John Thompson and Hannah Croggan.
Possible sister Sarah daughter of John Thompson, mariner and Hannah Cragg baptised March1792.Maryport.
Brother John born about 1795 in Maryport. No baptism found.
Only marriage found so far John Thompson carpenter of Cartmel to Hannah Cragg at Heversham in 1784.Their 1st Child Ann born Field End Preston Richard April 1784 at home of Hannah's father John Cragg. Baptised at Heversham .no more baptisms found around here.

Hannah (1789) has an illegitimate child Robert born 1808 at Endmoor, baptised at Preston Patrick.
1841 Hannah a dressmaker ,still unmarried is living at Stainton near Kendal next door to John and Elizabeth Thompson and family. Census says not born in county.
1851 she is a visitor at home of her son Robert in Kendal .Census says she is born at Grayrigg like all his children. Unmarried age 61.
1856 Hannah age 68 dies Blackburn at Roberts home.
By mid 1840s John Thompson (putative brother) has moved to Grayrigg (Lambrigg) and in all censuses from 1851 to 1891 states his birthplace as Maryport.
Any suggestions welcome.

Thanks everybody . I have now accessed the coroner's reports. Elizabeth had been an inmate since 1910. No information about family.

St. John's is either for sale or sold. Part of the diocese of Mancheter. There is an active  Wardle and Smallbridge history group which can be contacted on line.

I now have John Thompson's death record.
His widow is Elizabeth Hartshorn, age about 66.
Living children , 1 female age 26 (presumably Lillian)
Parents unknown.
Info given by undertaker.
There seems to be only one possible birth registered, a Lily Thompson , mother Lizzie no father given. Was registration compulsory ?
Would I be able to find out if /when Elizabeth T. his wife was in the mental institution if she is the death found by Minniehaha ?
It looks like John married Elizabeth Hartshorn in Ulverston Lancashire in 1865.
Sue

Wyvenhoe.
I am trying to find out what happened to John Thompson after 1861 Census when he is in St Bees. I found his son in New Zealand  which prompted this line of questioning.
It appears that he has a new wife Elizabeth before leaving England so I now need to find Sarahs death ( theres a possibility in Workington wrong age but close) and his remarriage and where he and son James Burrows Thompson are in 1871.
Sue.
PS he is one of my greatgrandfather Josephs brothers.
Edit  probable death of Sarah is Dec. Quarter Whitehaven in 1865.
1865 Trade directory has 2 John Thompson  shoemakers in Whitehaven.
