Argyllshire / The Very Mysterious John FLETCHER
« on: Saturday 06 December 14 00:06 GMT (UK)  »
My great grandfather's brother, John FLETCHER, has long been a mystery to us. Wondering if anyone can see something that we are missing??

John was the son of Alexander FLETCHER, a shepherd, and Catherine MCPHAIL. This couple had 10 children - John, Alexander, Angus, Ronald, Colin, Margaret, Catherine, Mary, Lily and Jane, all born at Achadeshenaig, Glen Aros, Mull, Argyll in the mid 1800s. Today, we found John's birth on SP but it only poses more questions. He was born on October 25th, 1858 but strangely enough it looks like he was originally called/christened (maybe even registered) as Archibald and then later named John which was registered on November 6th, 1858.

He worked at the Salen Hotel in the 1870s and 1880s, then disappears. We have very few clues, at least none that have helped us so far. The story goes that he joined the military and at some point deserted and then lived the rest of his days in/near Taynuilt under the assumed name of John MCDONALD. A nephew took care of his affairs after his death and it was he who supplied this information. John MCDONALD is such a common name and so many villages and parishes border Taynuilt, and the lack of a death year all make this a difficult task. He likely died between 1930 and 1950, so I wouldn't be surprised if some old native of Taynuilt might recall him.

John FLETCHER (alias MCDONALD) may have been married. The clue that hints at that is a circa 1900 photograph of my grandfather, Alexander FLETCHER (1890 - 1950), and all his siblings plus one extra child. This boy was only known to be called John and died not long after this. He may have been born around 1890, from how he looks in the photo.

As you can see, we have little more than tantalizing clues. My father has been going through John FLETCHERs and John MCDONALDs on SP but there are too many of them! Thanks for any ideas.

US Lookup Requests / PIERCE Vermont, USA
« on: Monday 01 September 14 01:26 BST (UK)  »
I have been trying to find roots for my husband's 3x great grandfather since 2001. This is my biggest brick wall. I would love to match him with a family once and for all.

Reuel A. PIERCE (A. most likely is for Anson) was born somewhere in Vermont 1805-10 era. By 1830, he had migrated up to the Ottawa Valley in present day Ontario, Canada and started farming on Lot 12, Concession 12, Fitzroy Township, at first as a squatter. He arrived with 2 other Vermont originated families, the SMITH and RHODES. Both had their beginnings in Massachusetts, so possibly Reuel's family did too. The SMITHs, spent some years in Williston, Chittenden County, VT. I have found PIERCEs there too but no Reuel among them so far. Perhaps I am not looking in the right place. His birth/baptism might be in some church records not available online anywhere.

After Reuel came to Canada, he married Ontario born Margaret MCLEOD and had a family. I am betting that among the children's names there may lie clues as to who his parents or siblings were. He was father to Sarah, Margaret, Emmaline, Catherine, Maria Ann, Reuel A. Jr., Henry Nathaniel and Norman.

A tantalizing notation in a book of local (Fitzroy Twp.) history mentions Emmaline PIERCE, his daughter, and refers to her as being a United Empire Loyalist descendant. Loyalists were Americans on the British side during the War of Independence, or British or Canadians actively supporting the British cause. They suffered, sacrificed a lot and most had to flee to Canada when the war was over. Anyway, I wasn't sure how Emmaline came to be UEL. It must have come from her parents, but which one? I now lean towards the MCLEOD side, but the PIERCEs may have left America for political reasons too.

All clues are good clues! Thank you very much!

Argyllshire / Please Help With Burial Record
« on: Friday 14 February 14 14:57 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,

My soon to be 83 year old father is the last of the Glen Orchy born Fletchers and he has been trying for years, through all sorts of channels, to establish his right to be buried in the family plot at Glenorchy Parish Church at Dalmally. His parents and infant sister are buried there. The problem is that the records for this plot have become 'lost' and the names of his family members were never inscribed on the stone. The last of those 3 burials took place in April 1950 and no one to attended that funeral, but my father, are living today. My father says that the Oban Times ran an obituary for his father and I'm wondering if it is possible to find an archived copy of it? It might give the place of burial. Looking for any proof for the burials of Annie Fletcher died September 1930, Catherine (nee McKinnon) Fletcher died December 1937 and Alexander Fletcher died April 1950. Thank you!!

Lanarkshire / KILPATRICK, NICOLSON of Hamilton
« on: Monday 08 July 13 16:59 BST (UK)  »
I'm hoping to learn more about Malcolm and John KILPATRICK, sons of James KILPATRICK and Isabella NICOLSON/NICHOLSON born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire. John was born about 1877 and Malcolm around 1882.

One of them may be my great grandfather, although no father's name appears on my grandmother's 1907 birth registration. I was hoping to eliminate one as the possible ancestor by finding him married or living far away from argyllshire where the child was born. It would mean a lot to me to finally find that long lost missing puzzle piece. Thanks!

Argyllshire / McNaughton at Ellary in Early 1900s
« on: Thursday 04 July 13 16:00 BST (UK)  »
Hello,
I'm looking for a missing link in my family tree. I believe a MCNAUGHTON couple who worked at Ellary Estate around the early 1900s might be the key. Mr. MCNAUGHTON (don't know given name) was game keeper for the estate and his wife was laundry maid. I have learned that Mrs, MCNAUGHTON might be my relative but I don't know either her given name or her maiden name. I would be very happy to find that information. Thanks very much!!

Oxfordshire / HARRIS Oxfordshire to Buckinghamshire?
« on: Sunday 28 April 13 00:35 BST (UK)  »
My husband's HARRIS ancestry has been very elusive. The common surname doesn't help. For years, all we knew was that his great grandfather, William HARRIS 1826 - 1886, came to Canada from England some time before 1874. We did not know where in England he was from, but a couple from Buckingham, Bucks, James HARRIS and Mary SPICER, seem to be his parents. Again, we were not sure of this fact for quite a while. My husband recently did Y DNA and found a match with a Robert HARRIS who was somewhere in Oxfordshire as early as 1572. Another man, not a HARRIS by name, matches both this Robert HARRIS as well as my husband, Ron HARRIS. This second man traces his ancestry back to Eynsham, Oxon about 1710. So I'm getting hopeful that I'm onto the right HARRIS line! Some male HARRIS must have migrated to Buckingham around 1800 or just before. Looking forward to learning more! Thank you!

Canada / Quebec Land/Property Records
« on: Saturday 23 March 13 17:37 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
I am really unfamiliar with searching for relatives in Quebec, but I think the key to solving one long standing mystery might lie in that province. My husband's great grandfather, William HARRIS (1826 - 1886) has no past before his rather late (age 48 years) marriage to Maria Ann PIERCE in Fitzroy Twp., Carleton County, Ontario in 1874. From his marriage record, we know his parents were James HARRIS and Mary SPICER, and that he was born somewhere in England. He is also a bachelor, it says. So where was he all this time? I cannot see him in Ontario, even on the 1871 census. I don't see him in England, but then William HARRIS is a terribly common name! I think the answer might be Quebec.

We know little about William HARRIS, but we do know that he was a stone mason by trade. We also know that his eldest son, William John HARRIS (1879 - 1952), had a little cabin in the rural community of Grove Creek, near Otter Lake, in Quebec and liked spending time there. If I only knew how William John came into possession of this cabin, I might learn something. My theory is that it was his father's home in his bachelor days. Being a stone mason, William HARRIS the father, travelled around from job site to job site. I think one day he got a assignment just over the border with Ontario, met Maria PIERCE and ended up marrying her and staying.

I have been trying to tie William HARRIS to a couple in Buckingham, Buckinghamshire, England. They have the right names as his parents and they have a son of the right age on the 1841 census.  This might fit very neatly with a ship's passenger list I have seen. The 'St. Ann' carried a group of 'Buckinghamshire's poor' to Quebec in 1844, including an 18 year old stone mason by the name of William HARRIS.

So maybe William was in Quebec for the missing 30 years?

New Zealand Completed Requests / Hugh MUNRO: What Ever Became Of Him?
« on: Friday 15 March 13 12:19 GMT (UK)  »
Hello,
Looking for what happened to a relative after he left his birthplace of Knapdale, Argyll, Scotland just over 100 years ago? Janet 'Jessie' MCGREGOR, my great great grandfather's sister, was married to John MUNRO. We were wondering what ever became of their son, Hugh MUNRO, who was born in 1869, South Knapdale and immigrated to New Zealand in 1909. Have never found a marriage or death for him in NZ. He remains a mystery. Thank you.

Canada / MCMILLAN: Was He in Canada?
« on: Saturday 09 March 13 20:50 GMT (UK)  »
Hello. My great uncle, George MCMILLAN (1857 - 1930) was a fascinating fellow. He left his family farm in Argyll, Scotland and married in Glasgow, then migrated south to Northamptonshire, England all in 1893. The couple had 7 children there. George's wife died in 1901 having the last baby. George hired a local girl as housekeeper and married her late that same year. The first of their 5 children arrived early in 1902. George packed up his large family and took them to Liverpool. Then George left for North America, leaving them behind, as his wife was expecting his 12th child, intending to send for them later. This was 1907/08. He was reportedly headed for Canada. I have not been able to locate him in Canada on any records. If he was in Canada, he didn't like it there because he ended up in Wyoming, USA. The census of 1930 says he arrived in 1912, which begs the question: where was he between 1907/08 and 1912? If he was in Canada, as I'm told, I would guess western Canada, but I'm not positive. Wondering if someone with fresh eyes can spot him in Canada? Thank you!
