The Common Room / When is a sister not a sister
« on: Sunday 27 January 19 00:32 GMT (UK)  »
Please bear with me on this tale...

I found my half siblings, via someone's help on RC, four years ago now... I have a half brother in Canada and half sister in California. Our father is the common denominator in this tale.

It turned out they knew all about me! They were very accepting of me and I spent a year and a half skyping my brother every fortnight, sent them lots of pictures of our father to fill in the gaps. My sister I spoke to less regularly as she's quite ill and undergoing invasive treatment.

Finally two years ago my OH and I flew to California to meet them, brother was over from Canada to stay with sister too. All went well... we stayed for 10 days with them.

Since we returned I've had no communication with my sister and only contact with my brother if I instigate it... now I don't.

I have been very puzzled over all this but just thought ok they wanted to meet me and now that's it... I've lived 60+ yrs thinking I was on my own so that's that.

My sister looks nothing like me or our father... or actually even like her own mother! My brother is the image of our father.

I know my sister and her husband have taken DNA test with Ancestry and so have I.

It came to me like a bolt from heaven the other day......

Surely even though she's only a half sister she would come up as a DNA match... wouldn't she?

There is NOTHING on my matches closer than 1st & 2nd cousins, all of whom I know....

So, my question is..... is she NOT even my half sister then?
It might explain some of her comments to me if she's realised this too!

I'd love my brother to take a test but don't think he would...

Our father left their mother for mine during the war.... they were born 10 months apart. Our mothers worked together during the war...

Any comments, advice would be great...

Thanks in advance

The Common Room / Discounting for ancestry subs
« on: Wednesday 07 November 18 06:07 GMT (UK)  »
Being a dippy blonde.....I've just been sorting out removing stored data from my iPad and realised I'd deleated the link someone very kindly put on about discounting subs for Ancestry.... it gave a very favourable rate and I was keeping it safe to use when my renewal comes up....soon!
I wonder if anyone know either who put the link up or where to find it again...

Thanks so much in advance

Surrey / Records for patients at London County Asylum, Banstead
« on: Thursday 23 November 17 14:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hello RC's

I wondered if anyone could point me in the right direction to records for London County Asylum in Banstead.

From the death certificate of my grandfather father Henry Guy he died in the above establishment on 22nd June 1915 from ' general paralysis of insane'.

This has come as a bit of a shock to me as I didn't know he'd died in an asylum.

I wondered whether there were record available for that period that one can look at.

From the certificate he'd had the condition for 1yr 6 mths so wonder if he'd been in there for that long.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

World War Two / Where to find Dads records of activity in N. Africa WWII
« on: Tuesday 21 February 17 17:44 GMT (UK)  »
My Dad was based in Egypt during the War and his regiment was R.A.O.C. He rose through the ranks very quickly and was finally ic of over 20,000 troops. he'd lived in Egypt since 1931 and was fluent in Arabic.

I sent for his service records some years ago and I have quite a lot of information regarding his promotions etc but what I'm really interested in is what did he ACTUALLY do. We once saw him in a film clip on TV when they were making a programme about Wilfred Thessinger.

My mother would say ' he disappeared into the desert for days/weeks at a time and after his return there always seemed to have been some major action...'
Is there anywhere anywhere that records, that I could look at, be kept.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated.

The Lighter Side / Hospital patient records for 1845
« on: Thursday 15 December 16 01:23 GMT (UK)  »
Hello out there

I was wondering if anyone knows if patient records for Charing Cross Hospital for 1845 might be available anywhere to view?

My 2x gt grandfather Henry Guy died on 31st Dec 1845 of ' ulceration of cartilages of knee and ankle joints' P.m. Certified - does that mean there was a post mortem?

The informer of his death was a sister in Charing Cross Hospital.

All this information is on his death certificate that I've just received.

Looking forward to hearing from anyone who can help
Thanks

I've just watched tonight's episode about Jerry Hall!!

Wonder what people thought?

She had a wonderful array of clothes suiting all occasions and thought she was on a photo shoot!! Hey that's just me though - jealousy doesn't get you anywhere!!

Having said that, I did find the history of the early frontier families quite interesting and she has obviously come from good solid stock who made a difference to the lives of people and something to be proud of.

Wonderful too to have such a lot of intimate information documented, but then there were fewer people around so it was probably easier to keep tabs on them all and write up the stories.

Pity there wasn't much time spent on the Halls in England. She didn't appear to realise the conditions that James had to work in as a child in the cotton mills.
I found it interesting the two letters she was shown had survived when there must have been many men working and living in the area while the railway was being built.
Who, where, how would those little scraps have been kept?
Could they have come from the family that still live in the area?

I think this episode may have been better suited for the American market.

Him in doors said he'd found watching paint dry more interesting and disappeared to watch Murray playing at Flushing Meadows!! He's usually  watches it with me, although sometimes just to humour me with passing comments! It must be wonderful to have your spouse who has the same level of interest in family research!

Look forward to others thoughts!!

The Lighter Side / Dilemma over Medals!
« on: Monday 31 August 15 08:11 BST (UK)  »
I would really appreciate your comments/advice on my dilemma!

I have my fathers WWII medals, which include the MBE he received. There should be a larger version of the MBE as a single medal.

When sorting through his possessions with my mother he also had a Masonic medal and she decided it, the Masonic medal, was of no interest to anyone else in the family so we threw it away with other unwanted items.

When Mum passed away in 2011 and I was clearing all her stuff out I couldn't find the large MBE medal and I have a dreadful feeling that we threw the wrong box away!

I, firstly wonder if anyone knows if it's possible to replace a lost medal like that and how to go about it?

Secondly, I was going to pass Dads medals on to my Son, but now I have found my half brother, after many years of searching, and he has nothing to remember of our father, he's such a lovely kind and gentle man too, I had thought if I was able to get hold of the large single MBE to give it to him as he obviously carries our fathers surname and it would be something for him to pass to his son who is the last member of the family with the Guy surname.

Some help, advice, thoughts would be much appreciated from this esteemed community please.

Canada Lookup Request / Looking for lost half siblings
« on: Sunday 19 July 15 11:54 BST (UK)  »
Hi
I'm new to this forum, so please bear with me! I'm trying to find the where abouts of the following people who are/were my half siblings.

 (*)b.1944 in Egypt
 (*) b. 1943 in Egypt

They left Egypt sometime between 1947-1959 with their mother Bella Guy (nee Tenenbaum). She married our father Edward Thomas Guy (1909-1974) in Egypt in 1937.

I have found them leaving UK for Montreal aboard The Empress of England in 1959 with (*) Jaffe b.1953  South African and the adult with them was a Lea ERMOU b.1907.

I have found a Lea Abcarius/Eden married to Thasos Ermou in 1952 reg in Marylebone, London. I am waiting for a copy of the marriage certificate to verify the information and to find out who her parents were etc.

There has been a Leah Eden (d.1967) burial found in Montreal at the Baron de Hirsch cemetery in Montreal. I have received a picture of the grave and am currently waiting for a translation of the Hebrew inscriptions.

I have also posted a message on the Ancestry Montreal Board for a (*)(*) and had a reply with the two men's names and addresses that COULD possibly be them. As yet I've not made contact as I want to gather more information.

I would be really grateful if anyone can shed any light on these people for me.
It is possible that Bella died or disappeared as there doesn't appear to be any trace of her and Lea(h) Ermou was a friend/relative. I believe Lea(h) was previously married to someone with the name Abcarius and also lived in Egypt. A person with this age has even found on a passenger list leaving Egypt in 1938 (aged35)

I look forward to any input anyone can give me.

Thank you
