Thanks for the information, certainly gets your imagination going.  Caroline Brewington (lover to James Gumble) as per one of the newspaper articles on FindMyPast has been difficult to track..... on 19th Jan 1877 she was listed on the Newington workhouse vagrant register.  I have found an admission and discharge record from the workhouse also in 1877 and her living with James in the 1881 census but thats about it.

Even the Pratt's (Harriet's husband Aaron) are proving elusive.

I'm not currently subscribed with ancestry.com.  I'll PM you my email address to make it easier to share information.

Hi Gordon,

Thanks for posting.  It has been a while since I have looked at all the notes!

I would love to know if you have information about John and Rachael (their traveller lifestyle, what happened to them or photos etc).  It would nice to add to the story.

Unfortunately all the research I have been able to do since this hasn't yielded any great results to help solve the other questions I have for this family.

Did you have any idea James Gumble was involved in the inquest?

Regards Mel

Roxburghshire / Re: Same couple married twice - why?
« on: Sunday 06 March 16 06:15 GMT (UK)  »
The two entries are listed on a subscription site under Scotland Marriages 1561-1910.  There are no images available for the transcribed entries.

I have the certificate for the 1809 marriage found on scotlandspeople, the 1807 marriage cert is not listed on the site.  The marriage certificate is scant on details - no witnesses listed or parent names or other information that could give clues, only the bride/groom from there parishes.

Is it possible the 1807 transcribed entry is incorrect? I suppose this could be the case.

Roxburghshire / Same couple married twice - why?
« on: Sunday 06 March 16 04:43 GMT (UK)  »
Hi,

I have the same couple - John Little and Janet Crozier who appeared to have married twice within a 2 year period.

1) 11 Aug 1807 in Kelso, Roxburghshire
2) 11 Aug 1809 Cavers, Roxburghshire

Any ideas why this would be?

Thanks Annette7 and CB53.  A bit more digging over the last 24 hours, and yes Lydia Bray married Richard Garner in 1891, some 10 years after living as husband and wife in the 1881 census.

All a bit confusing but it seems after Lydia's first husband died in 1868 (John Stacey) she makes her way to Deptford and marries Charles Bray in 1870, leaving her children back in Lancashire who are found as paupers in the workhouse in the 1871 census.  Lydia is with Charles Bray living in Deptford in the 1871 census.

Richard Garner (Lydia's 3rd husband) married a Ellen Armstrong in 1874 in Lancashire (his 2nd marriage) and at some point between 1874 and 1881 either Ellen dies or they separate and Richard and Lydia start living together, found in Lancashire in the 1881 census.

Of what happened to Charles Bray, I'm not sure (this is the person I'm most interested in!)  I can't find anything definite as yet.  Did Charles and Lydia travel up to Lancashire from Deptford or did Richard Garner travel down to the Deptford area for them to meet??  Why Lydia and Richard waited so long to get married I'm not sure.

There is a death of a Ellen Louisa Greenner in Deptford in 1879 aged 30 (which matches approx birth year for Ellen Armstrong) but this could just be coincidence.

Unfortunately listing birth place as 'not known' on a census is not helpful, but at least it is now deciphered.  If anyone else comes across anything interesting, would be extremely grateful, otherwise I'll keep plugging away.  I'm not sure that purchasing certificates will give me any clues as to what happened to Charles Bray.

Any thoughts for what the place of birth listed for Charles Bray might be?  I'm really at a standstill with this one, and not convinced that the information I have is for the Charles Bray I after.

Thanks

Thanks to everyone for helping with this.  It seems quite plausible that Combeinteignhead is the correct place.  I have done a bit more digging around the John Bray baptised in 1794.  There is also a Daniel Townshend(Townsend) Bray bap 8/10/1795 to John and Susanna.  John Bray married Susanna Townsend 11/1/1790 in Combeinteignhead.  These are the only 2 baptisms I have been able to trace thus far.  I'm still looking for some piece of information that can definitely tie/link all of this together with John Bray who ended up in Kent.

Hi Maec,

Your suggestion could be a possibility, unfortunately not being familiar with English accents and local geography I hadn't even considered this, so thank you.

From the information I have the father John Brey/Bray was a sailor from Devon, ? born in Newton Bushell (I have posted previously to confirm a birth/baptism record for him with no luck)    http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=737697.msg5838426#msg5838426

At some point he travels to Kent, marries Mary Smart in Plaxtol 27/11/1820 and goes on to have several children.
The baptism of the child(ren) were in Kent -

1) Mary Brey born 13 Oct 1821, bap 28 Oct 1821 (this baptism entry lists this abode as Coomb Anthony near Newton Bushel, Sailor in the ??unreadable) This information is from the Plaxtol parish record - was sent to me from a trusted person also researching this branch of the family tree who had viewed the parish transcripts on CD.

This is the only baptism record mentioning Coomb Anthony.  The other baptisms are listed in Plaxtol, Maidstone - Elizabeth Brey 1824 Plaxtol,  James Bray 1831 Maidstone, Caroline Amelia 1832, Jemima 1836, John 1839 and Charles 1844.  John's occupation changes from Sailor to Labourer, Chair Maker over the course of the rest of the baptisms, 1841 and 1851 censuses.

I haven't been able to find any records which may indicate if he was in the Navy or other Mariner group.

Thankyou for the suggestion, I'm in Australia but will certainly look into this option.
