I was keeping my recording of Len Goodman's WDYTYA appearance because I wanted to show my daughter the now derelict Polish fort where his ancestor Josef Sosnowski was incarcerated. She is coming tomorrow, so I have been looking it out in preparation. Guess what - I seem to have deleted it...

If anyone has a copy, it would be wonderful if you could you possibly fast-forward through it and see if there is a name and location for the fort - then hopefully Google will have some images I can find.

I'm so cross with myself!

Thought I'd better update this as I now have an answer to my quest.

Thanks to the wonderful Blackheath Society and the equally wonderful books on Blackheath Village by Neil Rhind, I now know that "Leslie" was demolished in the 1970s to make way for some flats. Gutted!

However, I have the name of the architect now and the people who lived there after my family moved away, so at least I have ended up with some more information. I also know that the house name changed to Shirland in 1900 with the new owners, and it was number 109, so the hunt is on to see if any photos survive.

Thanks again for all your help which spurred me on no end.

Thanks for the tip about oxygen!

Yes, I have been up and down the streets with streetview, but it's finding which one is "mine" that is the problem!

Fascinating indeed!

And, thanks to you both, I think I'm getting closer. I found that there is a fabulous listed house in Mycenae Road called "Woodlands", but wondered if it would be the same one as "The Woodlands" from the 1881 census. I started searching for the places you both came up with and Coombe Farm Lane hit the jackpot - a document all about the Westcombe Park Conservation area.
http://www.greenwich.gov.uk/NR/rdonlyres/419D961C-FD3D-4078-B0BD-455A8660469F/0/WPCAD02AppraisalA.pdf

In there it clearly states that William Bristow, solicitor, lived at Woodlands between 1879 and 1894. So that is the neighbouring house and is easy to find on Google maps.

However, not all done and dusted as apparently there was a property recession (!) in the 1880s and not many "gentlemen's residences" were sold near Woodlands. So I have no idea if the current neighbouring house to Woodlands is my one, or if it was a good distance away and umpteen others since then have filled the gaps... Maps next, I think.

I like the idea of the census taker nipping in for a cuppa, Linda, and thanks for the tip about referencing census records - noted for the future.

So grateful

Thanks very much for replying so soon! I imagine the census-taker must have been going along the road and then just popped in to the house at the end of Mycenae Road. It does seem odd I agree.

The numbers you have found may help me - thanks!

In the 1881 Alexander is down as Alexr (transcribed as Alexa by ancestry), so that might be why you couldn't find them.

Wondering if anyone with access to the censuses could do me a big favour?

I am visiting London shortly and would like to find my ancestors' house in Blackheath. I have their census records, but it would be very useful if I could find out the names/numbers of neighbouring houses on the pages before and after.

The family in question are

Alexander Currie, b 1833 Stepney
Jessie Currie b 1834 (a complete lie, but that's another story) Scotland
and children: Oswald, Rosina, John, Winifred, Mabel (only John and Winifred in the 1891)

The address of the house is "Leslie" Mycene Road (1881) / Mycenae Road (1891)

I already know that a neighbouring house is "The Woodlands" on the 1881 census and "Stanley House" and "Piercefield House" (both on a different street, which makes me think their house was on the corner) in the 1891. What I would dearly like to know is what comes before and after in both censuses.

Very grateful to anyone who takes the time to have a look at this.

Jo
