You're absolutely right - far away in Scotland actually.

Thanks so much, that's just the information I needed. I'll get on to it right away!

Does anyone know where I can access newspaper archives for Victoria BC? I am looking for an article that would be from around September 1933.

Many thanks

Jo

Oh very interesting! You are an absolute gem. How helpful to be visiting her sister at the time of the census and another sister to be there too. That's definitely the right one because PAIRMAN was her maiden name.

Thanks so much!

Hi Rosie

Actually I have just noticed that Carbrook Mains is very near to his uncle's residence when he died in 1883 - Glenside Farm. If you have a moment to see if he is there in the 1881, that would be great.

John JOHNSTON age approx 63 born Leslie Fife
Wife Violet age approx 55 born Biggar Lanarkshire.

Residence Glenside Farm, St Ninians, Stirling

Thanks so much

Jo

Can anyone with access to 1881 Scotland census help me find John JOHNSTON, born 1852 in Montreal Canada, staying with relatives in Scotland in 1881. Likely places are Bannockburn or Fife.

very grateful for any help

Fife / JOHNSTON Burntisland - did they emigrate?
« on: Friday 23 October 09 17:41 BST (UK)  »
Hi there

Bit of a long shot, but here goes: I have an Alexander JOHNSTON who appeared in Canada for the 1881 census, but was born in Scotland. As he was only age 12, it seems likely that his family emigrated with him, so I am trying to track the family back. Unfortunately it is a common name! But because of family connections, I am hoping he may have come from S Fife.

From the IGI I have narrowed it down to 2 possibilities:

I wonder if anyone could see if these families are there in the 1881 census?

Burntisland:

Father: John JOHNSTON
Mother Betsy MASON

Elizabeth b 1855
Jane b 1857
Robert b 1865
Alexander b 1870
John b 1872

If they are there, that rules them out as the emigrating family.

Another possibility would be:

Dunfermline

Father: Robert JOHNSTON
Mother: Betsy BISSET

1857 James
1860 Robert
1862 William
1865 Mary
1869 Alexander

Many thanks

Thanks very much for that useful information. Things have moved on since I last looked for records in the USA. Great stuff.
