The Common Room / Re: Two Places at the Same Time? 1871 census
« on: Thursday 16 January 20 12:58 GMT (UK)  »
My gg grandfather was a merchant seaman and was enumereated on two occasions when his discharge papers show that he would have been at sea.

I occasionally encounter online forms that insist on entering a county for a UK address.
I have come across sites that require that you enter a US state regardless of country.

I have one ancestor with four different locations despite never moving house. Different life events were recorded by parish, local authority or registration district all of which changed during her lifetime as what used to be called Metropolitan Essex was built up.

Technical Help / Re: ThreeDSecure not currently available

Possibly connected with the switch from 3D Secure to two factor authentication.

Now to make a payment I have to put the phone on the bedroom windowsill to get a signal for the authentication text.

I believe that delays in shipping convicts were common and wouldn't read much into being confined in England for several years before transportation.

This is common across all types of discussion board.

It is very obvious on IT boards where insufficient information is in the original post and the OP never comes back with the requested info.

The Common Room / Re: Names in The Family
« on: Friday 13 December 19 11:51 GMT (UK)  »
When we started the Family Tree building I remembered my Father (forenames William James Thomas) saying that he was named after his Uncles.

He had Uncles James and two William’s but I still cannot find an Uncle of his called Thomas.
"Uncle" may have been a paren't cousin or a great uncle. Three of my cousins once removed call me "uncle" and my mother always referred to two of her father's cousins as aunts. (Took me ages to get the relationship untangled)

England / Re: Same birth registered multiple times? - SOLVED
« on: Friday 13 December 19 11:36 GMT (UK)  »
It confused me when filling out a complete tree for the extended family. I found one of my cousins, the first of my aunt's second marriage, registered twice. My first thought was a miscarriage but my mother's family were very close and, at around 11 or 12 I would have expected to have heard. It was only on investigation that I discovered that a birth could be re-registered.

Technical Help / Re: Phone call from Amazon - but is it a scam?
« on: Monday 09 December 19 17:52 GMT (UK)  »
I have had my Tesco credit card compromised twice. Once was a small transaction in the USA, probably a test, and once that took out £1200. Both refunded but the £1200 took a second round of phone calls to refund interest charges. Once is unfortunate, twice and I moved to a new provider.

I always make sure that I have two cards available after one of the frauds caused the Tesco card to be refused when I was paying for a family dinner.
