Family History Beginners Board / Re: George Mills Bromyard ,Herefordshire
« on: Wednesday 02 September 15 09:54 BST (UK)  »
Thank you both for your input. I will certainly contact Bromyard History society and perhaps take a trip out there.

As to why the name Sam was chosen, that is a mystery. He was called that aged 5 on the 1911 census.By then he was back living at the blacksmith's in Collington with his grandparents, quite a few of their children and his mother. There would have been 3 Georges if he'd kept that name. I had wondered if Sam was his real father's name but would he have been called that if his grandparents were raising him as their own son? Wasn't getting pregnant when unmarried and so young considered somewhat shameful in those days?
Also, am I right in thinking Linton House was the workhouse? Was it normal for girls in my grandmothers situation to have their babies there? Perhaps,if the workhouse records survive, they might tell me how long
they were there and if she returned to her parents home directly after the birth.
I can find no record of a marriage for Caroline Maud Mills and no death record either but I can find a marriage record for Beatrice Annie Mills (Caroline's sister) to a Charles Bethell in Bromyard 1920 which could be the right one perhaps.

I am trying to trace the family history of my grandad, George Mills-known as Sam.
He was born in Bromyard Herefordshire, in Dec 1905. Registered Jan 1906.
I have the original marriage certificate for my grandparents marriage on which he gives his father as George Mills ,blacksmith, deceased of Bromyard.
The story mom told me was that we could not trace Grandad's side because he was probably illegitimate . She believed that his "sister"was actually his real mother.
When I researched this , I found a birth certificate which I believe is the right one- giving his mother as Caroline Maud Mills and father left blank. This fits everything else I know , since Caroline was the daughter of George Mills blacksmith of Collington Bromyard- the man he gave as his father on his marriage certificate.
Caroline would have been 16 and probably  in service, when she fell pregnant.
The place of George's birth is listed as Linton House, Linton (village near Bromyard?) and then on the 1911 census Caroline is back living at the forge in Collington district of Bromyard with her father George and some of her siblings. The youngest child listed is Samuel 5 (grandad?)
Caroline already had a much older brother called George and her parents George and Annie were late 40's so it seems likely that "Sam" was a grandchild, not son- their other kids were born less than 12 months apart and there is a big gap before him. A lot of this is conjecture but certainly Grandad "George "was known as "Sam" to everyone connected to his later 2nd marriage.
Those who remember him,say he never seemed to have any siblings or any family come to visit in later life when he lived in Birmingham but my mother believed her middle name -Beatrice -was for one of his sisters which again links me back to this family in Collington.
Any help/advice would be appreciated.

Thanks very much for this.I had already penciled in the marriage at Mucklestone as possibly the correct one and visited the church there last year.
I did not know about the other 2 children and the Baswich link . It does sound likely as the name John-whilst very common-does continue in every generation of our family tree even up to today!

Family History Beginners Board / Thomas Hackett Ellerton Grange Staffs?

Can anybody help me finding out information about my 4xgreat grandfather whom I believe might have been a Thomas Hackett working at Ellerton Grange in around 1790?
His son, John Hackett was born Ellerton Grange in 1804 and baptised at Adbaston St Michaels.
I believe he was the youngest child of Thomas and, possibly Hannah Hackett.(We do not,I believe descend from the more wealthy line of textile manifacturing Hacketts associated with Ellerton and then Derbyshire.)
 There were also a number of daughters-Elizabeth(1790) Mary(1791) Hannah(1793)Ann(1796)
Sarah (1798) and Frances (1800) all baptised at Adbaston.
John subsequently ended up in Bridgnorth from the 1820's where he was a labourer and died in the workhouse there in 1883. I can trace all the history from Bridgnorth to the present day but know nothing for sure about the family in Ellerton and/or Adbaston. Any advice welcome!
