Kent Completed Lookup Requests / 1841 census lookup please - CRONE
« on: Sunday 26 March 06 17:04 BST (UK)  »
I would appreciate someone could kindly check the 1841 Kent census for JOHN CRONE, born about 1828 in Queenborough or Sheerness, Kent.  His father was DENNIS CRONE, who served in the coastguard service.  I have no further information on the father, only that by 1856, he had died.

Please note that I have already posted this request on the Cornwall and Devonshire boards, but it's been checked that John's not in either county in 1841.

Many thanks for any help.

Thanks so much, Janan, for looking!

The first sign of John Crone is on the 1861 census, serving as a coastguard on the Kent coast.  He won't show up on the 1851 census as he was onboard a Royal Navy ship (off the Canadian coast, I think) and I know that censuses were only taken on ships from 1861 onwards.

I know that he was in the Plymouth area with the RN in 1856, when he married Margaret Lyden.  On the marriage certificate his father's name is given as 'Dennis Crone, coastguard (deceased)'.

I'm trying the 1841 censuses for the various south coast counties in the hope of tracking him down (he would only have been aged about 13 or so).

Thanks again for trying - next stop the Sussex board!!

best wishes

I wonder if someone could kindly check the 1841 Devon census for JOHN CRONE, born about 1828 in Queenborough or Sheerness, Kent.  His father was DENNIS CRONE, who served in the coastguard service.  I have no further information on Dennis, only that by 1856, he had died.

Please note that I have already posted this request on the Cornwall board, but it's been checked that John's not in that county in 1841 (ie this isn't a 'duplicate' posting).

Many thanks for any help.

Completed Census Requests / Re: Help! Can't read occupation

The first letter does look like a 'w', but I wonder if the enumerator was trying to write 'linsey' (linsey-woolsey being a coarse woollen/cotton cloth woven, I think, in Scotland at this time).  Just a thought.....

I'm trying to find JOHN CRONE, born about 1828 in Kent (Queenborough and Sheerness are birthplaces he gives on later censuses) on the 1841 census.  His father was DENNIS CRONE, who was a coastguard, probably born in Ireland.

He may be living in or near St Germans at this time, as another family of coastguard Crones are living there and I think he's related to them.

Any help would be much appreciated.
